Why Study Latin Latin helps with English grammar and vocabulary. Approximately 60% of English words, 90% of words over two syllables, come from Greek and Latin. Because it is an inflected language, Latin helps with any foreign language study, but it is especially helpful for the study of the Romance Languages. Knowing Latin vocabulary is very useful for work in scientific and medical fields. Latin is very attractive to law schools because of its training in analytical and synthetic thinking. Latin is the living language of the Roman Catholic Church. Latin helps verbal SAT scores.
