An earthquake is when the earths crust moves. And that causes the earth to shake, vibrate or move. The most damaging earthquakes occur around the popular cities. When 2 plates in the earth get jammed the tension builds up causing a humongous quake.

The map to the right shows where earthquakes happen. The zones where quakes most happen are along the tectonic plates ( also known as the earthquake zone).

Earthquakes consist of land and the land is the plates in the earth and when the fault line allows the plates to shift it causes the earth to vibrate creating a huge earthquake.

During an earthquake always stay AWAY from doors. Only if your in doors though. And if your in beds stay there and cover your head with a pillow, unless you have a light ficture over your head then you would go to the nearest safe spot like under a table or door frame.

The after effects of an earthquake can be devastating. Some people can be trapped under rubble or debris for days. Many people may also loose their homes and sometimes even important people in their lives. But as soon as possible rescue teams are there way.

The way you measure an quake is by a Richter scale. The most recent large earthquake was in Chile measuring at 9.5 on the Richter scale that is insanely high!

The best thing to have somewhere in your house is an emergency kit. Earthquakes are one of the deadliest natural disasters. Atypical earthquake can last up to sixty seconds Alaska has the most earthquakes then any other in the U.S. An earthquake can cause a volcano to erupt.
