Primary 7 News Letter Term 1 It’s great to see all the children back, looking very smart in their school uniform and ready for the challenges of Primary 7. This is obviously a very important year for the children as they prepare for moving on to secondary school. They will be given the opportunity to play an important role in the life of the school by being Buddies to the Primary 1s, monitoring various classes, being part of the Hit Squad, the Pupil Council and the Eco Committee. This is what the children will be learning about this term. Language The main focus of the writing programme for this term is Personal Writing. The children will be writing their autobiographies, in preparation for this they will be investigating the ways in which some famous people have written their autobiography. This will also enable the children to identify grammar rules and vocabulary used in an autobiography. The children will continue to use the Nelson Spelling Programme and will be given weekly homework to support this. Each child will be given a reading book, we ask you to discuss the book with your child and to listen to them read a passage from it. Mathematics Once again, it is so important for your child to know their times tables, this will enable them to work with confidence when learning fractions, decimals and percentages. The children will be working with numbers up to a million, knowing their place value as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with them. They will be investigating the nets of 3D shapes to discover what combinations of 2D shapes they are made of. Environmental Studies This term the children will be learning about the importance of Conservation. This is a science based topic that will provide the children with the opportunity to research, experiment, analyse and report on a variety of conservation issues. By the end of the topic the children will have a greater awareness of the human effect on our precious planet, thus enabling them to make informed decisions on how they can play a positive role in protecting the planet and all that live in it. P.S.D/Health Bullying is something every school wishes to eradicate. To enable the children to make positive decisions they will be learning about all the different aspects of bullying. R.E In RE the children will be looking at the different ways religions express their faith through the arts.

Expressive Arts Music - Miss McKean will be teaching music this term. The children will be learning about the different notes and their value as well as the singing that they enjoy. Many of the children have already been auditioned and are now part of the choir. On Fridays some of the children have started recorder lessons. P.E - Both class have P.E on Tuesday. At present coaches are coming into school to teach them basketball and football skills. We ask that you ensure your child has their P.E kit with them every Tuesday. Swimming - The children in Room27 go swimming every Wednesday and every child is expected to go unless there is a good reason for them not to. If, this is the case please contact the school by phone or letter and let us know. Girls are asked to wear swimsuits and caps, boys must have gel free hair. Thank you for your support with this. Room 28 girls and boys will go swimming later in the year. Art - The children will be developing their observation skills by producing detailed drawings. They will be using a variety of lines to produce effect. ICT Miss McKean will be teaching the children ICT this term. They will be refining their word processing and power point skills. The children will also be using their ICT skills in most areas of the curriculum. Homework All the children have been given a homework diary and they are responsible for keeping it up to date. Spelling and maths homework will be given out on Monday to be returned by Thursday. At other times during the week the children will be given reading homework and on occasions homework connected to other curricular areas. Every child is expected to complete the homework tasks, if there is a problem with doing this, please let us know. Lunchtimes Just a reminder to say that if your child is going home please let us know by letter or a phone call. For some reason, some of the Primary 7 children think they are allowed to go out for lunch by themselves, this is not the case. Children either go to dinner school, bring a packed lunch or go home with permission, this is to ensure the safety of all our children. We appreciate your support with this. We look forward to working and having fun with the children. If, you wish to speak to us we will to be delighted to see you, please call in or phone the office to make sure we are available.
