This Selection’s Reading Strategy – How to Identify Elements in the Plot

Reading Strategy – page 50 How to Identify Events in the Plot The order of events in a story is the plot. In many stories, the first event begins with a problem that the main character has. Each following event in the story carries the plot to it’s conclusion, or end. If you understand the plot, you know the beginning, the middle and the end of a story.

Reading Strategy – How to Identify Events in the Plot As you read, ask yourself: 1.Who is the main character? 2. What is the character’s problem? 3. What events lead to the conclusion of the story?

Reading Strategy Practice – Loomie Visits the Planet Meepar Part 1 The people on the planet Zaxton are lonely and want to meet some new people. One day Loomie, the queen on Zaxton, looks through a telescope and sees people on the planet Meepar. She wants them to come and live on Zaxton.

Reading Strategy Practice– Loomie Visits the Planet Meepar Part 2 Loomie flies to the planet Meepar and meets the king. He says Meepars are lonely just like the people of Zaxton and puts her in a cage and keeps her there.

Reading Strategy Practice – Loomie Visits the Planet Meepar Part 3 Many Meepars come to see Loomie and hear about her problem. Finally, they suggest a solution. For six months some Meepars will go to Zaxton to visit. Then some people from Zaxton will visit Meepar for the next six months. That way everyone will always have company. Everyone likes the solution and Loomie flies back to Zaxton in a spaceship full of new Meepar friends.

Identify Events in the Plot ________ Conclusion ________ Event 3 ________ Event 2 ________ Event 1 ________ Problem Meepars visit her. Loomie goes to Meepar; gets put in cage. Zaxton people are lonely. All agree to visit each other. Loomie goes back with friends.
