Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006 Ugo Contino – Nunzio Femminò –

Agenda  The CIBER context  An overview on usage statistics production for CIBER’s users  The new portal for usage statistics  Users sample identification  Network tools chosen to measure users’ productivity  Analysis methodology  Some preliminary results  Final remarks ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006

The CIBER context  university library consortium funded by 5 Universities in Central and Southern Italy in 1999  currently 27 universities from Central and Southern Italy are members of CIBER (about professors/researchers part of its population)  aims: electronic content licensing and loading, preservation, promotion and dissemination of scholarly publishing, training  more than 6,5 millions of on-line scholarly articles from 4477 e-journals of 9 different publishers (80% full-text articles)=> CIBER Digital Library ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006

Usage statistics for CIBER DigLib  Fully compliant with COUNTER (1) specs (rel. 2) since May 2005 (data available since January 2005)  Usage statistics available reports: journal_report1 (articles download) and journal_report2 (turnaways)  Stats_engine produces more information than the one requested by COUNTER (journal category, user type, downloaded article cover date, etc.)  All stats data feed a local DB (MySQL based) ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006 (1)

The new portal for usage statistics  Interactive multi-user system  Output schema (stats download included) JR1 and JR2 Standard COUNTER reports Top list reports (journals, issues, articles, subjects, IP)  New elements of usage analysis: Article cover date Library of Congress Subject e-journals Categories MIUR (1) Subject e-journals Categories  The “free query” function  Open source tools for portal development ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006 (1) Italian Ministry of Universities and Scientific Research

ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006

The chosen approach  Query: To verify if there’s any correlation between scientific production and articles download for a specific sample of University of Messina scientific community  Method: Given a sample population and a well defined time period, we decided to retrieve the total number of publications from that sample and the total number of article download from CIBER DigLib, focusing on journals from the same disciplines of the sample population ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006 We analyzed the behaviour of 920 users (mean value accross ) from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Matemathics, Medicine and Pharmacy Departments (main scientific area for University of Messina) Materials Science and Engineering A Journal of Power Sources Journal of the European Ceramic Society Neuroscience Letters Forensic science international Life Sciences Farmaco Thermochimica Acta Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis Physica B: Condensed Matter NUCLEAR PHYSICS A Marine Chemistry Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis Journal of Molecular Structure Journal of Molecular Liquids JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY JOURNAL OF CHROMATOGRAPHY A Food Chemistry EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF PHARMACOLOGY Catalysis Today APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE APPLIED CATALYSIS A-GENERAL E-journals chosen for Article download analysis

Scientific production ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006 Introduction of Bibliographic Abstracts DB Univ. of Messina joined CIBER consortium

Articles download ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006

Possible correlation?  Given a specific year (2004) we tried to find a possible correlation between the number of downloaded articles and scientific production  Focus on various scientific disciplines  SCOPUS as tool to measure scientific production (better coverage of Italian scholarly journals)  Used normalized data ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006

The RMS user ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006 The more you read the more you publish? (…don’t make it too simple…)

Final remarks  Difficulty in getting out coherent information on scientific production  Data analysis performed only on a specific subset of Messina scientific population  Interest in enlarging user’s attitude to scientific production involving other CIBER universities ICOLC Fall 2006 – Rome, Domus Pacis – October 2006

Thank you for your attention
