Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Engineering Diploma Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Planning Unit Delivery

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design L2 U2 Investigating Engineering Design Approach given here is formed by following the awarding bodies: Learning outcomes Assessment tasks Learning outcomes: Next > Know about construction and function of an engineered product or system (LO.1) Design specification – prepare from a given brief (LO.2) Design proposals – prepare from a given specification (LO.3) Prepare a final design solution (LO.4)

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design LJ Research and Design module is based around the design of a new transportation system in the form of a maglev mass transit system Engineering theme: The module activities are used for acquiring knowledge and skills during unit delivery PowerPoint presentations Design tasks Program control tasks on real and simulated track Research tasks Scientific investigations Next >

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Assessment Task 1 – Construction and function of an engineered product or system For an engineered product or system investigated, write a short, simple report The scheme of work suggests looking at how a product is put together, e.g. a mobile phone The scheme of work also refers to the Basic Electricity module that shows the construction of a torch and a desk fan Students should consider: Construction – How is it made? What is it made of? Function – What does the product do? What is it used for? How does the product work? Evaluate the performance of the product. Is it fit for its purpose? Is the product ergonomic, efficient and reliable? The support documents include an assembly drawing of the maglev propulsion unit The maglev control software contains factors to consider for the vehicle design Next >

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Assessment Task 2 – Design Specification From a given design brief, identify physical constraints, performance requirements and reliability indicators to produce a design specification The brief provided is a requirement to transport passengers between an airport terminal and new departure gates 2.5km away Example support documents are provided to show how, after some research and brain-storming, a specification is produced to meet the requirements of the design brief Next > Students specification should consider: Dimensional constraints Functional requirements Required operating performance parameters Economic and manufacturing considerations

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Next > Assessment Task 3 – Design Solution From a given design specification, produce 3 initial design proposals Produce a final design report and present it The specification provided is for the passenger transport system between the airport terminal and the new departure gates Choose a final proposal and explain your selection, considering the requirements of the specification Students are expected to include sketches and diagrams. If appropriate, they can also include a demonstration using the model maglev system or simulation

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Next > Skills and knowledge acquired from the Research and Design module: Design brief and specification Testing and evaluating Research Choosing a design solution Economic considerations Prototyping Consideration of design criteria A full list of module activities is provided

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Delivery and assessment approach: Assessment briefs and tasks are provided An example of a scheme of work is provided that enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills to complete the assessed tasks It refers to: Assignments in LJ modules Student textbook Internet sites Ideas for visits LJ support documents Next >

Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Delivery and assessment approach: The unit requires students to be able to apply skills in report writing and presenting The scheme of work refers to relevant sections of the FS560 Functional and Key Skills module It is an engineering contextualised functional skills package for support in the areas Maths, English and IT Students will benefit from an understanding of business activities that drive the development process The scheme of work refers to relevant sections of the ST710 Skills for Enterprise module End >
