Name the surrounding states of New York

What is a landmark? An event marking an important stage of development or a turning point in history.

Statue of Liberty Located in New York Harbor. Symbolizes freedom and democracy. It was a gift from France in the 19th Century.

Empire State Building It is the 2nd tallest building in New York. It is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. It is 102 stories tall.

Freedom Tower Built after the destruction of the twin towers. It is the third tallest building in the world and the tallest building in New York City.

Grand Central Terminal 21.6 million people visit it annually. It was opened in 1871. It is the main terminal in the tri-state-area.

Matching: It symbolizes freedom It is 102 stories tall It is the tallest building in New York City It is the main terminal in the tri-state area

Activity: In groups look online and find out why each of the four landmarks (the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Central Terminal, the Freedom Tower, and the Empire State Building) are landmarks.

Why each is a Landmark Grand Central Terminal In 1947, more than 65 million people -- equivalent of 40% of the U.S. population -- traveled through Grand Central Terminal. With the value of prime Manhattan real estate rising and railroad profits falling, the railroad began to talk about demolishing Grand Central Terminal and replacing it with an office building. New York City's new Landmarks Preservation Commission stepped in, in 1967 to designate Grand Central Terminal as a landmark protected by law, temporarily squashing the development plans. Empire State Building It stood as the world’s tallest building for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center’s North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the 9/11 in 2001, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world). The Empire State Building was once again demoted to second-tallest building in New York on April 30, 2012, when the new World Trade Center reached a greater height.

Why each is a Landmark Statue of Liberty It is a symbol of American Freedom and is also 100th anniversary of the United States of America and France’s friendship. Freedom Tower Built as a memorial for the for the victims who died in the 9/11 attack.

Homework Assignment: Select a state other than New York and identify two important landmarks in the state you choose. Write a few sentences as to WHY the landmarks you picked are landmarks.
