Native American Lands Out of our group’s deepest respect for the land and the people, we present you with a gift that is a token of gratitude for listening to us.

Presentation Regaining Lands –Naomi Domben Land Utilization –Merlene Cook Land Protection –Phillip Fulmer

Past Native Americans were the original inhabitants of the Americas, many generations before the arrival of Europeans Native Americans did not believe in individual land ownership, but instead shared the land, and utilized it only as much as they needed, leaving enough for future generations to continue to live off the land

Native American Population ,684 Native Americans –8,500 Living on Reservations –15,700 Living in Urban Areas

Regaining Lands What’s been lost –Way of Life –Cultural Ways –Ability to Self Govern and Be Self Sustaining

Utah Reservations

Regaining Lands What other tribes have done to regain land: –Legal Battles and Government Return –Tribal Purchase of Land –Receive Gift of Land

Land Utilization Control of Tribal Reservation Resources Master Plan -Designed by commission of tribal representatives with education and experience in large scale planning presented to the tribal council. -Commission elected from tribal members at large.

Areas of expertise for commissioners –Sacred Burial Grounds Keeping sacred areas of reservation off limits –Water and Water Rights Protective of water ways, upstream water and any dams or reservoir planning –Living Communities Utilizing the best possible means for better planned communities for Native Americans. Land Utilization

Farming or Ranching acreage –Appropriate land for Farms and Ranches Roads/Access and Transportation –Control roads for commerce and tourists to cross reservation lands. Mineral Rights –Gold, silver, uranium, coal, shale –Control of depletion of minerals and time restrictions Land Utilization

Natural Resources –Fishing, waterways, timber, natural rock monuments. Legal Expertise with Leasing Contracts –Review all contract for terms of agreements and benefits for the tribe. Land Utilization

Land Utilization Cost Budget of $300,00 for initial set up and required budgeting each year there after. With the direction of the Master Plan and oversight of Native American Tribe Council, the cost of savings to the tribe will be in the millions.

Beyond the Limits “A sustainable society is one that can persist over generations, one that is far seeing enough, flexible enough and wise enough not to undermine either physical or social systems of support.” –Donella H. Meadows

Land Protection Preserving and Precutting the Land Work with the Department of Land Management, Archaeologist Working with Law Enforcement to protect people. Working with congress to get back land that was rightfully theirs.

Land Protection Indian Mineral Leasing Act of 2003 Native American tribes have been and continue to be subjected to significant amounts of radioactive and nuclear waste sites like uranium mines, nuclear power plants, and toxic waste dump sites

Land Protection Groups that that are helping tribes and trying to prevent radioactive and toxic waste –Just Transition Coalition –Indigenous Environmental Network –Honor the Earth Foundation –Apollo Alliance –Black Mesa Water Coalition –To’Nizhoni Ani –Grand Canyon Trust –Sierra Club

Land Protection Native American reservations utilize alternative energy, solar power, wind power, but government does not give tribes federal tax credit.

Conclusion The land is an important part of the NA culture, and tonight we have given you suggestions that we think may help the tribe. We feel strongly that with growth, the NA can move forward with the new decade and regain, utilize and protect this land that the ancestors cherished.
