Nurse Externship Summer 2010

What is a Nurse Extern? The Inova summer nurse externship program is an employment opportunity for well-qualified nursing students to work in collaboration with an RN preceptor in either an acute care hospital setting or an outpatient clinical setting. Nurse Externs work along side their preceptor learning patient-care flow, nursing unit routine, documentation, physical assessment and a variety of technical skills. Nurse Externs have an opportunity to be a member of the health care team that includes but is not limited to: RNs, physicians, unit secretaries, care team assistants/technicians, respiratory therapists and OT/PT.

Medication Administration NURSE EXTERNS DO NOT ADMINISTER MEDICATIONS Nurse Externs may research and discuss all aspects of medications with their preceptor and physicians however the scope of the Nurse Extern role does not include the administration of medications. The Nurse Extern role is summer employment and, although the program will greatly enhance your clinical education, this position is not the same as a nursing school clinical where a nursing student is allow to administer medications under the direct supervision of the clinical instructor or preceptor.

Clinical Placement in the Externship During the interview process, candidates will have an opportunity to discuss clinical areas of interest as well as hospitals for placement in the extern program. The goal of the extern program is to match a nurse extern to a clinical area that will enhance learning, provide exposure to a desired area and could be congruent with goals for a new graduate position, however placement in a particular area cannot be guaranteed due to the large number of applicants. To be considered for an externship in a specialty area, clinical experience in that area is preferred. i.e., if you would like to be considered for placement in Critical Care Units, completion of a Medical Surgical clinical rotation or work experience is desired.
