Obesity and Overweight By: Jesus Garcia Raising Awareness

So… Why did I choose this project on overweight and obesity? I wanted to raise awareness I wanted to change students perspective on healthy foods and physical activity

What is obesity and overweight? Obesity and overweight is an excess amount of weight (fat) that gathers around the mid section and around the abdominal area.

Culture and Religion CultureReligion Effects what we eat Strict on what they can eat Having more options Having less options

What are causes of obesity and overweight? It’s caused by lack of physical movement through the day A poor diet also leads to obesity because of the lack of nutrition the body intakes

What are ways to prevent it? An increase in your daily activity for 30 minutes Reduce the amount of calories you consume a day.

What if you don’t prevent your self from overweight and obesity? High blood pressure Diabetes Heart disease Joint problems (osteoarthritis) Sleep apnea and respiratory problems Cancer

All of these symptoms could lead to a higher risk of death or if not serious health related problems.

Global Connection Japan’s government made a law to make all its citizens lose weight and to reduce the amount of their waistline to 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women. Japans government did this to decrease the amount of stroke and heart disease within its country. National Connection Michael R. Bloomberg, the mayor of New York tried to ban the amount of coke a person could purchase to reduce the amount of health problems linked to coke and sugar. But was struck down. The Alameda County in San Francisco started a 10 week campaign to motivate and educate residents to make healthier beverage choices and started a soda free summer program in 2007

Local Connection In September 12, 2012 the Mayor, Annise Parker announced the launch of Healthy Houston. Main purpose was to help reduce the amount of obesity and increase healthy eating and exercise. Encourage urban agriculture in community, school, backyard and rooftop gardens (Ex: The Groove). Improve access to healthy, affordable and locally produced food for all neighborhoods. Educate about physical and mental health risks of obesity. Provide healthier foods in school.
