SELF-PRESENTATION IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD OF By Chelsea Trotta

Self-presentation “The process by which people convey to others that they are a certain kind of person or possess certain characteristics” (Leary 1996: 17) Managing the impressions that we make on other people Consciously or unconsciously In an online setting one can “inspect, edit and revise” before available to others

Main Points Self presentation tactics Motivation Effects of challenging situations Feedback

Self-presentational Tactics 1. Self-descriptions 2. Attitude statements 3. Non-verbal behaviors 4. Social Associations

Self Descriptions How you present yourself using words

Attitude Statements Statements about their values

Non-verbal Behaviors Emotional expressions, physical appearance, and gestures/movement

Social Associations Do not emphasize their own personal attributes. Instead they publicizes their connects with sports teams, celebrities, or political parties

Motivations Sex : Sex appeal, wanting to attract the opposite sex by portraying yourself as “experienced”

Motivations Age : Always wanting to display ourselves as older than we actually are

Motivations Personality : Exaggeration, fakeness, attention seeking. More time to think of what to say than in face-to-face conversations

Motivations Attractiveness : Edited/photo-shopped photos, tagging/hiding pictures from timeline, self pics/mirror shots
