National Numeracy Strategy Progression in teaching calculation strategies for Addition and Subtraction (examples for addition)

Stage 1: Mental counting and counting objects. (Reception) How many teddies? There are 2 teddies and 3 teddies. That’s 5 teddies altogether. Watch me count them!

Stage 2: Early stages of mental calculation and learning number facts with recording. (Year 1) What is 2 plus 4? 2 plus 4 is 6. Look, I’ve written it as a number sentence!

Stage 3: working with larger numbers and informal jottings. (Year 2) I’ve used a number line to find 41 add 19!

Stage 4: Non-standard expanded written methods. (Year 3) =

Stage 5: use of standard written methods. (Year 4) Expanded method working left to right Compact standard method working right to left.

Stage 6: use of calculators for solving ‘real-life’ problems involving large numbers. (Year 5) Altogether our school trip is going to cost: Coach: £ Entry: £ Lunch: £ Insurance: £ Total: £1,539.14
