Low Rolling Resistance Tires Tom Murphy Energy Technology & Policy December 6, 2007

Rolling Resistance  Car engine must overcome rolling friction to propel the vehicle forward — this requires fuel consumption  Rolling Friction Force: Type of TireC rr Ordinary Tire~0.015 Typical LRR Tire< Best LRR Tire~0.006 Normal Force (vehicle weight) Rolling Resistance Coefficient Rolling Friction Force

Facts About Tires  Vehicle manufacturers usually install LRR tires on new vehicles to help meet CAFÉ standards more easily  Most replacement tires are not LRR ~237 million replacements sold each year None are labeled with any indication of their rolling resistance coefficients

Benefits  A 10% decrease in C rr can decrease fuel consumption by 1-2%  California Energy Commission estimates total gasoline use can be reduced % if all tires in use were LRR  This can be safely implemented with current technology
