MATHEMATICAL LITERACY CONCESSION NQF regulation governing fundamentals for registration of Qualifications as National Certificates: 120 or more total credits 72 at or above level of the certificate, 36 of which in fundamentals, as follows: - 20 in Communication - at least 16 in Mathematics
Maths literacy concession Current policy regarding National Certificates at NQF 1-4: A minimum of 36 credits at level 1, and 52 credits at levels 2-4 Shall be divided between the core and elective categories ( with each qualification specifying the distribution in these 2 categories)
What does the SAQA policy mean? For certificates at levels 1-4 there must be 16 credits from the mathematics sub-field, in the Fundamental category, at the level of the qualification Example: a certificate at NQF level 4 will require 16 credits from the maths sub-field at level 4
Sources of existing “standards” related to maths literacy Standards related to maths/maths literacy can be found in the following sources: SAQA: -u/stds for Numeracy ABET levels 1-4, NQF1 -u/stds for maths literacy, NQF levels 2-4 -u/stds for mathematics, NQF levels 2-4
Sources of existing “standards” related to maths literacy (contd) Standards related to maths/maths literacy can be found in the following sources: Dept. of Education: - Curriculum statements, learning outcomes and assessment standards for maths grades R-9 -Curriculum statements, learning outcomes and assessment standards for maths literacy grades Curriculum statements, learning outcomes and assessment standards for mathematics grades 10-12
LevelMathematicsMaths literacy NQF 4,3,2 e.g. algebra, trigonometry, logarithms, calculus, sequences, series… Applications of NQF 1 maths in increasingly complex situations e.g. personal budgeting Mathematics and maths literacy NQF 1 ABET 3,4,1 Number concept(whole, negative, Fractions, decimals) and applications involving: addition, subtraction, multiplication, Division, average, ratio, proportion Percentage, Measurement, area, volu me,graphs, data, shapes, formulae, patterns, simple relationships…
Implementation through INSETA Open access into the Qualifications: What does this mean? Cannot keep learners out who do not have the relevant levels of maths literacy Unequal education and training impacts on achievement of Maths literacy levels
Implementation through INSETA Issue: how to bring those without the required level to the level of those with the required level Solution: for those with the level: - reinforce standard through RPL exercise to establish level of literacy -Design cross-curricular learning programme to “teach” the fundamentals in the other unit standards -integrate the assessment through assessing the outcomes of the fundamentals in other core and elective unit standards
Implementation through INSETA For those without the required level: -present a basic course, which brings people “up to speed”with the unit standard outcomes -assessment of these levels -Carry on with the teaching of the standard through cross-curricular teaching -Integrated assessment
The concession has been completed, Which means: From 2005, all learners in a Qualification must achieve the credits at the level of the Qualification
