Numeracy Workshop Numeracy

I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand. (Chinese proverb)

Early Numeracy Sorting Sorting - Making sets of objects that have 1 thing the same. (Autumn Sort: leaves/conkers/acorns) - Making sets of objects that share 2 properties the same. (Shape&Colour: blue circles/green squares/yellow triangles) - Making sets of objects that share 3 properties the same. (shape, colour, size: big blue circles/small yellow squares) - comparing sets (why are they together? Can I put this here?) - partitioning sets (leading to how many on this side? How many on that side?) Relationships Relationships - Patterns making a 2 sequence pattern making a 2 sequence pattern e.g red/green/red/green Making a 3 sequence pattern e.g. black/yellow/pink/black/yellow/pink - Copying a pattern (from a picture/instructions) - Continuing a pattern (carrying the pattern on) - Devising a pattern (making their own) "Good teaching is more a giving of right questions than a giving of right answers." - Josef Albers

Number Counting- Mental Maths Counting- Mental Maths - Counting forwards/backwards - Counting forwards/backwards - Number before/after - Number before/after - Addition/Subtraction - Addition/Subtraction Understanding Number Understanding Number - one to one correspondence - making sets in order 1-5, conservation of number (find me 1 apple, lets get 4 plates) - 1 more than/1less than - 2 more than/2 less than - Adding practically up to 5 - Taking away practically up to 5

Areas of Mathematics Measure Measure - Length - Weight - Capacity - Area - Time - Money Shape & Space- 2D and 3D, Bee Bot Shape & Space- 2D and 3D, Bee Bot Data Handling- Tree, Venn and Carroll Diagrams Data Handling- Tree, Venn and Carroll Diagrams "It's ok to try things out, to ask questions, to feel unsure, to let your mind wander, to daydream, to ask for help, to experiment, to take time out, not to know, to practise, to ask for help again - and again, to make mistakes, to check your understanding" - Jane Revell & Susan Norman Compare the difference between objects. Place objects in order of size. Match objects of the same size. Use non-standard units.
