U.S. History Unit 9: The End of the Cold War to Today The Big Idea With the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the Cold War ended and the U.S. was seen as the world’s lone superpower. But on September 11, 2001 terrorists struck the U.S. bringing new fear and war.
