Naples (meaning "new city") is the capital of Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy, after Rome and Milan. As of 2012, around 960,000 people live within the city's administrative limits. The Naples urban area, covering 1,023 km 2 has a population of between 3 million and 3.7 million, and is the 8th- most populous urban area in the European Union. Between 4.1 and 4.9 million people live in theNaples metropolitan area, one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea.

The Naples School of Medicine dates back to the foundation of the University of Naples, ordered by the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Frederick II on 5 June, This scholarly and illuminated sovereign had clearly understand that only Naples, a city of solid Ancient Greek and Roman culture, could accommodate his social conception of learning. According to Federico II, culture should be available to all, without travelling afar…. These principles therefore were the cornerstones of the oldest state School of Medicine. This was a great advantage for young scholars of the time, but not for the actual Institution which flourished when sovereigns dedicated their efforts and intellect, but suffered in times when leaders where otherwise occupied by battles and war. The university houses several diverse museums which reflect the many scientific areas of the Institution and their long history. These collections are remarkable for their quantity and quality and many departments also represent their teaching and research history including relevant scientific instruments, equipment and other artefacts (documents, pictures etc). The most important medical collections are:

Museum of Anatomy (c/o Human Anatomy Section in the Department of Chemical and Preventive Public Medicine) This museum’s complex history reflects the progressive extension of its collections, its ever changing autonomy, and its role in the many crises between the late 18th century and the Unification of Italy. It is linked to the Museums of Mineralogy and Zoology, and these three share phases of common splendor and decadence, rises and falls which were strongly related to the political, historical and administrative events of the city and which reflect the sometimes difficult relationship between science and power. MUSEUM OF PHARMACOLOGY: instruments, books, journals and drugs of historical interest. (c/o “L. Donatelli” Pharmacology Section, Department of Experimental Medicine). The historical collection of instruments, drugs, books and furnishings that forms the "Leonardo Donatelli" Museum in the Department of Experimental Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the Seconda Università di Napoli represents the scientific and cultural legacy of generations of scholars involved with the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology dating from its reorganization within the Chair of Medical Subjects, ordered by Domenico Cirillo in the late 18 th century. "De Re Dentaria apud Veteres" MUSEUM and collection of dental preparations (c/o Department of Oral Medicine and Surgery) Since the turn of the century the department heads Professors Scervino, d`Alise, Giardino, Marenduzzo, and currently Prof. Gombos have collected and stored materials, documents and books on dentistry In the archives, storage and library of the ex-Institute of Oral Medicine. In the school of Dental Technology directed by Professor Renato De Fazio, instruments in use at the beginning of the century were collected until 1970.
