Action Sequence Photography Sean Hetrick

History of Action Sequence Photography Muybridge started his career as an assistant to landscape photographer Carleton E. Watkins. He began to build his own reputation in 1867 with photos of Yosemite and San Francisco. In 1872, businessman and former California governor Leland Stanford hired Muybridge to settle a question: Stanford claimed, contrary to popular belief, that there was a point in a horse's gallop when all four hooves were off the ground.

Eadweard Muybridge In 1874, still living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muybridge discovered that his wife had a lover, a Colonel Larkyns. On October 17, 1874, he sought out Larkyns and shot and killed him. He was put on trial for the killing, but acquitted of the killing on the grounds that it was "justifiable homicide." By 1878, Muybridge had successfully photographed a horse in fast motion using a series of fifty cameras. Each of the cameras were arranged along a track parallel to the horse's, and each of the camera shutters were controlled by trip wires which were triggered by the horse's hooves. This series of photos, taken at what is now Stanford University, is called The Horse in Motion, and shows that, indeed, the hooves all leave the ground.

Eadweard Muybridge Later, he conducted research in order to improve the chemistry of his development methods to better capture motion in his photography. The system was, in many ways, a precursor to the development of the motion picture. Hoping to capitalize upon the considerable public attention those pictures drew, Muybridge invented the Zoopraxiscope, a machine similar to the Zoetrope, but that projected the images so the public could see realistic motion.

The photos shows that the hooves do all leave the ground although not with the legs fully extended forward and back, as contemporary illustrators tended to imagine. History of Action Sequence Photography

Action Photography Today Today, we can now combine these images to create an action sequence all in one picture, showing all expects of the action.

Action Photography To create these photos: Shoot in RAW to so you have the option to go back and correct something after the photo is taken. Shutter speed should be a fast shutter speed to freeze motion in a frame of each part of the motion. Tripod may not need to use, if it gets in the way if covering a sport.

Start by picking a background picture and other pictures to place in the photo. Click on the layer mask button that is circled to the left to put a mask on the photo. How to Mask

Change the fill color and use the brush tool to reveal the other picture. The color white shows or reveals the image and the color black hides or masks the image. How to Mask
