Who is Mrs. Mount?  Taught 1st grade in a private school,  Taught 3rd and 4th grade at Felida Elementary for one year (long-term sub)  Taught 5th grade at Marshall Elementary for 2 years  This is my seventh year teaching at Chinook (I’ve found my home!)  2

Important Information  s  When I receive a parent , I try to get to it immediately.  Please keep them short – I have very little time during the day to read s and want to reply quickly.  My responses will tend to be short and to the point, so I can get back to the class.  If you have a lot to tell me, please set up a time to conference or talk on the phone.  6

Snacks  Please keep them healthy – I am always promoting healthy eating in class.  The students go 4 hours after they get to school until lunch and tend to be starving by first recess.  Please make sure the snack doesn’t need to be refrigerated, or need to be eaten with utensils.  8

3rd Grade Curriculum

Reading  120 Minute Reading Block Everyday (30 minutes = writing)  45 minutes is spent in Whole Group Instruction.  45 minutes is spent in leveled instructional groups.  Reading Instruction will focus on Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, Motivation, Cognition, and Knowledge using the our new Wonders curriculum. 10

Within each Theme the following objectives are addressed…  Reading Strategies- Predict & Infer/Summarize/Monitor & Clarify/Evaluate  Comprehension- What does the reader understand from the meaning of the text.  Decoding Longer Words- examples: syllabication, inflected endings  Vocabulary-Understanding the meaning of new words in the text  Grammar-Identifying complete sentences, capitalizing, and punctuation, subjects and predicates  Writing-Friendly letter, using commas in dates and places  Listening/Speaking/Viewing-Literature discussions, introductions, telling a story  Information and Study Skills- Parts of a book, using a dictionary, using a KWL chart  11

Math We will study the following areas of Mathematics this year… Topics 1 – 3 will focus on place value, addition, and subtraction Topics 4 -6 will focus on the meaning of multiplication and multiplication facts 12

Writing We will focus on…  Writing in a variety of forms and for different audiences, such as letter writing, research writing, and narrative writing  Paragraphing  Moving from 3 trait writing to 6 trait writing: Ideas and Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions  15

Social Studies Through units of study, students will build knowledge and skills in history, geography, economics, and civics with the goal of developing responsible citizenship. Units we will focus on throughout the year are:  Early Northwest Coast People  Mapping Skills  Celebrating Cultural Diversity  Wonders curriculum has several units with a social studies focus imbedded in it. 16

Science Through making observations and planning investigations, students build their understanding of science. Topics of study include:  Rocks and Minerals  Plant Growth and Development  Sound  Force

Technology Areas of Focus are…  Learning keyboarding and word processing skills.  Testing skills necessary for success using the computers.  Beginning to apply technology skills to learning.

Homework Mondays: Vocabulary and Spelling Please keep the half-sheet and use the words during the week as much as possible. Tuesdays: Math You will be able to access the math book via the enVision site using the username and password that was sent home. Wednesdays: Possibly Literacy This will relate to the skills and comprehension that we are focusing on during literacy. Thursdays: Probably Math Our math curriculum has become more challenging and we have found great success having math homework twice a week.19
