YEAR 8 PATHWAYS PRESENTATION 2015

Welcome Ms Pennington Assistant Head Mrs Carney KS3 Leader of Pupil Progress

Aims of this evening  To outline the main changes to qualifications and the curriculum and outline the current government position.  To provide you and your child with information to help you to make the best decisions for KS4 and beyond.  To understand our PATHWAY PROCESS.

Why are pupils taking their options in Year 8?

Why are pupils taking their options in Year 8? The Government has made major changes to GCSEs: No controlled assessments-assessed through an exam (with the exception of practical subjects, for example, art, design technology) All exams to be taken at the end of the course – NO MODULAR EXAMS and no chance of resits An increase in the number of exams pupils sit at the end of Y11 Changes to the grading system: Old grade A*,A,B,C etc… have been removed and numbers will now be used 9,8,7,6

 Graded from 9 to 1 9 being the highest  Grade 9, 8 & 7 equivalent to A*/A  Grade 6 at the moment looking at being required for A Level  Grade 5 higher grade pass (high C or low B)

Why are pupils taking their options in Year 8? Exams to become more difficult and rigorous Need to be better prepared Three year KS4 will help pupils to study GCSE subjects in more detail Opportunity to study the subjects they are good at and enjoy Increased focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG)

Why are pupils taking their options in Year 8? Government measure called: Progress and Attainment 8 The Government, Further Education Providers and Employers are now looking for more than the minimum 5 A*-C with English and Mathematics

Why are pupils taking their options in Year 8?  Introduction of the suite of Ebacc qualifications (English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Geography or History and MFL)  English and Maths need to be retaken until passed (at present grade C or above) up to the age of 18

What help will students receive with the choices they have to make?

Explained the process (what, when and why it is happening?) Questionnaire to gauge their opinion and to make initial enquiries about what subjects they are interested in studying Year 8 Assembly (Friday 27 th March 2015)

Data analysis based on questionnaire responses

Is it a good idea to get pupils in Year 8 to choose their options and start their GCSEs in Year 9?

Are you looking forward to it?

Do you know what subjects you will continue in next year? remember everybody does English, Maths, Science, RE, PE and PSHEe

Does moving into KS4 worry you?

Which of the following do you think would help you to choose what to do next year?

Pathways: Pupils have been placed on a PATHWAY which will determine which subjects they will be allowed to choose from. This is done using all the tracking information we have on your child. It is done with your child in mind, so that they have the best possible chance of gaining the best qualifications they can.
