YMCA Global Citizenship Development Plan Seven Steps for Global Citizenship October 2008 National Council of YMCAs of Japan Supported by DEAR, Seisen College

Education for Global Citizenship asking questions and developing official thinking skills equipping young people with knowledge, skills and values to participate as active citizens acknowledging the complexity of global issues revealing the global as part of everyday local life, whether in a small village or a large city understanding how we relate to the environment and to each other as human beings. Learning to commit and participate in some activity in the own community or YMCAs.

Global Citizenship: Working definition in our context Global Citizenship is both an awareness and act of commitment rooted in the spirit of global consciousness and interconnectedness of the world. It recognizes the need to understand global realities and social responsibilities and motivates the people to develop a mindset as citizens of the world with human and ethical values. It promotes social responsibilities and actions towards justice in the collective community, peace and sustainability of life by citizens as change agents.

Seven Steps to Global Citizenship 1. Fund Raising 2. Recruitment 3. Preparatory Studies for participants 4. National GC Training Program 5. International GC Training Program 6. Global Citizenship Award by WA 7. Commitment as a GC at Y or NGOs

1. Fund Raising Goal: 10 million Yen(US$100,000) for 100 young Global Citizens Method: Recruit 100 volunteers to raise 100,000yen(US$1,000) each Period: Oct- Dec 2008 Each Candidate will need 200,000yen at least for the National and International trainings. We will support one half through this fund.

Budget for the Global Citizenship Education program in Income （ 1,000yen ） Fund raising 100.X100 10,000. Participation fee (Japanese only) 100.X70Japanese 7,000. Other donation 3,000. Total income 20,000. Expense （ 1,000yen ） National training 50.X100 people 5,000. Air fare assist to Asians 50.X30 people 1,500. International training 150.X70 Japanese 10,500. Other Expense 3,000. Total Expense 20,000.

2. Recruitment of Candidates Candidates: 18 to 30 year old, total from YMCAs: 1 year of volunteer activities and Intermediate English ability, GS recommendations 10 from Christian Universities: English ability, Professor's recommendations 30 invited from APAY YMCAs: English ability, NGS recommendations for the National Training program

3. Preparation for GC training Each candidate should : Read materials on four issues: Peace, Poverty and Human Rights, Multi Cultural Society, Sustainability of life Field work: Choose one subject and study the issue in detail by some field trip to NGOs ＆ interviews. Write a positioning paper on the subject

4. National GC Training Program scheduled Sept , 2009 at Tozanso 70 Japanese, 30 from abroad, 10 leaders Day1: Opening, key note speech, presentation of individual studies in 4 issue groups Day2: Development education (DE), field work orientation Day3: Field work (community research) all day by groups of 5 Day4: Group presentation of field work, followed by action plan and discussion Day5: Presentations by Groups. Farewell party Reports have to be submitted in 2 weeks.

Development Education Second day program Use a simulation games to understand the realities of the global issues. There will be 4 games or role plays along the four issues. Each person will choose two according to his/her interest in small group workshops. Four issues dealt in the National Training ： Peace 、 Sustainability of life 、 Poverty and Human Rights 、 Multi Cultural Harmony

Field Trip and Action Research Third and Forth day programs Action Research is a method for people to find out some issues and problems in the community, find out its root causes and understand the nature of the problems. Groups of 3-5 draw maps of a community and take pictures of what they have noticed along the theme they chose. Discuss and present the findings and thoughts, and action plan to solve the issues.

Necessary skills throughout the education process English Ability: the English proficiency is required to some extent to be a candidate for a Global Citizen. It is expected to learn and develop English skills up to TOEIC for the Award. Presentation Skills: Provide many opportunities to present ideas in a group with IT equipments efficiently.

5. Global Citizenship Trainings by APAY, WA, or East Asia Ys Common Curriculum for Global Citizenship Award authorized by WA Held in a few locations from Oct 2009 to August 2010 by WA, APAY and CKJ YMCAs.

6. Global Citizenship Award WA provides GC Award to the successful candidates upon completion For those Awarded youths, YMCA will provide Internship trainings in YMCA network for 1-12 months.

7. Commitment as Global Citizens Each youth (with Global Citizenship) will perform activities in different social and global issues in the community through YMCAs or other NGO/NPOs. YMCAs also should be involved in various issues in its communities, supporting the young GC’s continued influence in the society.

Necessary support system for Active Global Citizens In order to support Awarded youths to commit and participates in activities, 1)To make action plan through the action research. 2)To have some advisors in each theme to supervise the positioning paper of each participant. 3)To make some opportunities to present own findings and analysis to the others. 4)To provide mentor system by volunteers from YMCAs and NGOs. 5)To make a network among the participants to work together and support one another.

mentor system ◇ Provide a mentor system for one mentor to 3-4 youths to become active global citizens for one year after the Award. ◇ Recruit 20 or more mentors who are willing to support the youth to be involved in community or international activities in YMCA, NPO/NGO or with others. ◇ Those mentors are asked to help as volunteer basis but need some special knowledge and experiences in the field are necessary.

“Think globally and Act locally” Global Citizens are required to imagine unseen realities and to create a new world. It is important to make a network of those individuals. The YMCA should be the association of those Global citizens.
