Education It’s Not Business As Usual

Business as Usual? Information is exploding In 1870 the information a person would encounter in a lifetime is the same amount of information now found in one issue of the New York Times. The digital Universe has grown 1000% in the last 2 years There are now over 450,000 words in the English Language. That’s 7 times more than William Shakespeare had to choose from.

The majority of jobs our students will have do not currently exist. The technology they will use hasn’t been invented yet They will be solving problems that haven’t even emerged yet.

?? How do we prepare students for a world that we can’t even imagine?

A Grecian urn You have just purchased an expensive Grecian urn and asked the dealer to ship it to your house. He picks up a hammer, shatters it into pieces, and explains that he will send one piece a day in an envelope for the next year. You object; he says “don’t worry, I’ll make sure that you get every single piece, and the markings are clear, so you’ll be able to glue them all back together. I’ve got it covered.” Absurd, no? But this is the way many school systems require teachers to deliver instruction to their students; one piece (i.e. one standard) at a time. They promise their customers (the taxpayers) that by the end of the year they will have “covered” the standards.

What is the Common Core? The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what to do to help prepare them. Designed/Taught in a manner that helps them to see connections.

Previously, every state had its own set of academic standards and different expectations of student performance. Consistency Common standards can help create more equal access to an excellent education. Equity All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers, but also with students from around the world. Competition Clear and coherent standards will help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them. It is time for states to build on lessons learned from two decades of standards based reforms.
