20 TH CENTURY OF FASHION

EMILIO PUCCI He was born in 1914, Florence Italy. In his early life he was very interested in sports, he swam, skied, fenced, and played tennis. At age 17 he traveled to lake placid as a part of the 1932 Italian team winter Olympics but he did not compete. He then went off to study at the university of Florence where he was awarded a doctorate in political science. In 1938 he joined the Italian air force, he served as a 79 torpedo bomber pilot during World War II. After 2 years he left in the hopes of a better life and to pursue his fashion career. His first clothing designs were made for the Reed college skiing team. His designs really started becoming popular in 1947 when he began selling ski wear to friends and family as a small business. One of his customers wanted a photo shoot so he hired Toni Frissell, and he spread the word about Pucci’s designs and they started to become popular. He initially used stretchy fabrics for swim wear, but decided he like them so much an used them for all clothes. He also took quite a bit of interest in prints. His designs were unlike any other people were used to classical styles that showed sophistication. His showed his daring personality and it was considered risky. He is best known for his tight “Pucci Pants” and vividly printed silk dresses and blouses.

Pucci is famous for his multi-colored and elaborate patterned pants and his printed dresses

NORMAN NORELL Norman Norell was born on April 20 th 1900 in Noblesville Indiana. From an early childhood Norman had the ambition to become a artist. After spending a short period at military school during world war I he decided it wasn’t right for him and decided to go into fashion design at the Pratt institute. In 1922 he joined the New York studio of Paramount Pictures, where he designed clothes for a series of actors in silent movies, including Gloria Swanson. Then he worked as a costume designer on Broadway. In 1943 he won a Coty Fashion Award and became a critic at the Pratt institute fashion department. Soon after Anthony Traina invited him to join him to form a fashion company, which was called Traina-Norell, with Anthony looking over the business side and Norell the fashion side. He launched chemise dresses, evening dresses, fur coats, fur slacks, and empire-line dresses. Norell was famous for his elegance and simplicity. Which completely contrasted Pucci’s ideas that were coming out in the same time period.

Norell was famous for his evening wear selection
