About Mr. Gay  Born in Bradenton, Florida  Lived in Springfield, Missouri for 5 years (94-98) while attending seminary.  Wife, Serina, is the Tech. Ed. Dept. Chair at Central Gwinnett. She teaches Food Science and future teachers.  Worked with Bank of America before becoming a teacher in 2006.

OUR TEXTBOOK:  The World and Its People. (2005) Glencoe.  Journey Across Time. (2006) Glencoe. A class set is provided for use during class time. An electronic copy is available through eclass. You may be able to request a set of books for home use by contacting your child’s case manager.

Course Objective  Students will be able to use map, globe and information processing skills to understand the history, physical geography and cultural geography of North America, Latin America, Europe, and Australia as outlined in the Gwinnett County AKS.  Current events will also be integrated throughout the semester.

Timeline 1 st Semester: 1. Map and Globe Skills 2. Introduction to Government and Economic Systems 3. Europe: Physical Geography, Historical, Political and Economic Development 4. Canada: Physical Geography, Historical, Political, and Economic Development

Timeline 2 nd Semester 1. Latin America and the Caribbean: Physical Geography, Historical, Political and Economic Development 2. Australia: Physical Geography, Historical, Political and Economic Development 3. Personal Finance and Money Management 4. Extension Activities (current events, projects, reinforcement of material learned this year.)

Evaluation  Final averages will be based on Northbrook’s Academic Grading Scale. Weighted Percentage Scale Summative Assessments48% (tests & projects) Formative Assessments40% (Class work/HW 20%) (Quizzes 20%) Interim Test3% Semester Final10%

Evaluation Academic Grading Scale A= B= C= D= U= 0-69

Evaluation Effort Grading Scale E= All work turned in on time with effort shown. S= Most work turned in on time with effort shown. N= Most work is late and shows little effort. U= Most work is not turned in and no effort is shown.

Evaluation  Academic grades will be based on tests Projects quizzes class work/homework Interim and Final Exams (13% of total grade)  Effort grades will be based on participation in class Work completion

Evaluation  There will be no extra credit given in this class.  I am available for extra help, questions, or concerns.  It is the responsibility of the students to ask for extra help. (Self Advocacy)

Expectations  All work is expected to be turned in on time (beginning of the class period). Students with excused absences will have one day for each absent day to complete missed assignments. Late work must be turned in within 2 weeks of the original due date.

Expectations  Students must be on time and prepared with all of the necessary materials for class each day.  Students need a 1.5 inch, three ring binder.

Expectations  It is the students’ responsibility to obtain work missed during any absences. The student should schedule to make-up tests upon his/her return.  Appropriate behavior is expected at all times. Students will not be allowed to disturb the learning environment of others.

GRADE RECOVERY  I will attempt to collect make-up work from students, however, it is THEIR responsibility to do the work and turn it in. I provide a website with many resources. I will remind students, I will offer morning help sessions by appointment. I will contact parents ( ed progress reports, direct s, and/or phone calls.)
