The History of Nursing Florence Nightingale  Born in Florence, Italy  Founder of modern day nursing  In 1844, decided to work in a hospital  Credited for improving knowledge and conditions in public health nursing  Served as a nurse in the Crimean War , improving conditions in the military

What is Nursing? Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.

What Nurses Do Perform physical exams and health histories Provide health promotion, counseling and education Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized interventions Interpret patient information and make critical decisions about needed actions Coordinate care, in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals Direct and supervise care delivered by other healthcare personnel like LPNs and nursing aids Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes Need/RNsAPNs.html

Education  Undergraduate Degree:  Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN): two year degree offered by community colleges  Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BS/BSN): four year degree offered at colleges and universities  Graduate Degree:  Master’s Degree (MSN): offers a number of tracks to prepare educators, administrators, or Advanced Practice Nurses  Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): usually research programs  Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): focuses on clinical practice or leadership
