Under the Taliban, secular education did not exist. Boys received religious education, but girls were forbidden education altogether.

The education system in Afghanistan is regarded as one of the country's biggest success stories since the Taliban has been driven from power. hh

As of 2013, more than 10 million male and female students were enrolled in schools throughout Afghanistan.

Still – today - 85% of women in Afghanistan have no formal education and are illiterate. kk

An Afghan woman checks on her daughter in a hospital after nearly 50 Afghan teenagers were in the hospital due to a mystery gas attack on a girls' school. Attacks on girls schools have increased. A year prior to this incident, a group of schoolgirls in Kandahar had acid thrown in their faces by men who objected to them attending school.

It is very uncommon that children in orphanages are provided with proper or any education. Two decades of war in Afghanistan has left some one million orphans and abandoned children across the country.
