Forms of verbs Every verb has three basic forms called its principal parts: 1. Present 2. Past 3. Past Participle

Present We live in a mobile society.

Past Automobiles gave travelers more freedom.

Past Participle Drivers have enjoyed this freedom for years. *Notice the helping verb have is used in the past participle form.

The Two Types of Verbs There are two types of verbs: 1. Regular verbs 2. Irregular verbs

Regular verb: A verb whose past and past participle are formed by adding –ed or –d to the present. Ex. Moved, traveled

Irregular verb: A verb whose past and past participle are NOT formed by adding –ed or –d to the present. Ex. Bring- Brought Catch- Caught Dig- Dug
