What is ERTMS/ETCS? European Railway Traffic Management SystemERTMS The European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) has two basic components: ETCSEuropean Train Control SystemETCS, the European Train Control System, is an automatic train protection system (ATP) according to which a failsafe trainborne computer – > – compares the train actual speed with the permitted speed (sent from the Trackside subsystem) and it slows down automatically the train if the limits are violated GSM-RGSM-R, a radio system for providing voice and data communication between the track and the train, based on standard GSM using frequencies specifically reserved for rail application with certain specific and advanced functions

Why ERTMS/ETCS? ERTMS/ETCS allows the uninterrupted travel of passengers and goods through national boundaries ERTMS/ETCS is a Standard for Europe, therefore it opens the European market for railway products ERTMS/ETCS improves the safety of existing railways ERTMS/ETCS increases the capacity of existing railways Past: reasons that led to the ERTMS/ETCS development ERTMS/ETCS is a flexible system able to adapt to any kind of Railway needs, within European boundaries and beyond ERTMS/ETCS is a system standard, which stimulates the competition among several suppliers Future: reasons why ERTMS/ETCS is becoming a Global de facto Standard

Ansaldo STS designs, develops and manufactures in-house the main ERTMS/ETCS System components which are applied in ERTMS Level 1 and/or Level 2 projects, namely: Eurobalise (Standard Size and Reduced Size) Lineside Electronic Unit (LEU) Radio Block Centre (RBC) OnBoard Unit (OBU) Specific Transmission Module (STM), for different legacy systems Ansaldo STS ERTMS/ETCS Systems and Products
