WHAT IS THE AADMD? Established in 2002 Composed of physicians and dentists who are dedicated to medical and dental care for the population of adults with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities (ND/ID) Goals: Advocate for improved IDD healthcare policy, Create and help implement standards of care, and educate and train healthcare practitioners and their support team.

AADMD MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the AADMD is to improve the overall health of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual disabilities (ND/ID)* through patient care, teaching, research and advocacy. *This includes people with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome and over 2000 other childhood onset syndromes.

WHAT’S THE HEALTH STATUS OF ADULTS WITH ND/ID? Demographics 70% of IDD patients are on Medicaid 30% exist below the poverty line Once they reach the ages of 18 – 21, their Medicaid benefits often end Individuals with IDD are at a 20 – 30 times higher risk of life threatening heart defects 80% have chronic re flux and heartburn pain 47% have untreated tooth decay 1 in 8, at any given time, are in active dental pain 1 of every 2 individuals with IDD have hearing issues Over half of these individuals simply have too much wax in their ears Over 50% of individuals with IDD wear the wrong shoe size 1 ½ sizes too big or too small 20% have low bone density Over 20% fail vision exams

AADMD ACTIVITIES Working to create practice standards of care for the adult IDD population Establishing practice care guidelines in the Emergency Rooms – the special skills and techniques needed to treat IDD patients in emergency situations Working with organizations nationally and internationally to focus on practice care for dementia patients

AADMD ACTIVITIES (CONT) Educating future doctors and dentists on how to treat IDD patients Creating curriculum for medical and dental schools across the country 80% of physicians graduating from medical school have never treated an individual with IDD 50% of dentists have never treated an IDD patient Yet – when surveyed, 75 – 80% of graduating physicians and dentists want to treat IDD patients

GOALS OF STUDENT COMMITTEE Create community of students/residents interested in serving adults with ID/DD Provide opportunities for education, leadership, and growth within the field Match up members with AADMD physicians/dentists for guidance Create community projects and advocate for individuals with ID/DD Assist schools in creating their AADMD chapter
