ConIAC 18 th March 2014 Construction 2025 H&S Challenges Gren Tipper - Construction Clients’ Group and member of Construction Leadership Council Delivery Group

Image “improving performance in the domestic repair and maintenance market” “Engage and inspire young people” “Maintain the UK’s global leadership position in health and safety by driving up standards on smaller projects and bringing greater focus to occupational health” “Our goal is for the UK construction industry to operate under safe and healthy conditions at least comparable to other sectors of the economy” “bring the same focus to health as it has to safety” “Industry and Government will work together to improve the image of the industry” “zero harm becomes the norm” Construction 2025 “build on the achievements of the highest performing projects”

Our Industry can be broken down into 3 broad segments:  Larger professional companies with developed predominantly longer standing supply chain partners  Medium to small sized professional companies traditional sub-contracted supply chain  Largely unregulated smaller contractors operating in the domestic/small occasional client area ? ? ?

Larger professional Medium to small/micro professional Unregulated smaller enterprises Training/ Competence Safety Health Y/Y Y/? Y/Y ?/N Y/? N/N ?/N */* directly employed or supported as such/sub contracted but limited direction An indication of where the challenges lie in the industry:

Construction 2025 ConIAC is seen as best means of engaging industry ConIAC is good at tasks but can be slow for good reasons – how can the CLC support ? What makes us world class? What part can the professional parts of the industry play in influencing and supporting the difficult to reach parts of the industry? Rapid growth New people to train How do we share the work out How do we eat the elephant? What is Government’s role in dealing with the unregulated sector? What part does the regulatory framework play in our success? What proportions make up the segments or is there a better way to segment to focus improvements and support Need to get over “not invented here syndrome” What are our current areas of excellence and how do we make better use of them? Build on what we have - collaborate Emerging from a major recession Building on what we are doing well as World leaders Foreign workers The industry image is disproportionately impacted upon by the minority
