Functional ICT Lesson Four Finding and Selecting information

Recap File sizes are important when ing a document – why ? What is storage measured in ? Storage is measure in kb, mb, gb and tb. Compression can be used to increase file sizes – true or false ? Do all digital devices have some form of storage in them? Yes, or else they would not be able to store information or data. When creating file and folders – what should you do? – Make files and folders clear as to what they contain. – Set the permissions to limit what others can do i.e. read, write, edit Viruses can be spread by : , internet, networks and memory sticks Make back-ups and keep them in a different location

Managing, Finding and Selecting information Lesson Aims and Objectives – find and select reliable information appropriate for purpose and audience – evidence how you manage information saved from the internet You will learn how to: – identify the information requirements of a task – construct efficient searches – evaluate the reliability of websites – select appropriate information – acknowledge your sources

Browsers and search engines Task – What is a web browser and what is a search engine ? A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. A search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. A web address is made up of 2 components sometimes mins Extension task : 4 common browsers

Bookmarks or favourites Book marks or favourites are stored web addresses. If you want to visit a web page again, storing it as a bookmark will allow you to easily traverse to that webpage in the future. Task- Skill builder Open the list of favourites in your browser. Click on an entry in the list. What happens? 2.Add the address of a website that interests you to your browser’s favourites. 3.What other facilities does your browser offer? 10 mins

Recap - File Names and Extensions Browsers allow you to access the internet Search engines allow you to search for information. Bookmarks allow you to save pages for future use A web address is composed of a minimum of two parts – the prefix indicating it is a web page and the domain name, can also have the name of the web page.

Efficient searches When looking for information on the internet you need to ensure : – The search criteria is accurate If you do not use good/clear search criteria: – Lots of hits that are not relevant Use boolean operators to narrow down the search. AND, OR, NOT, =,, <=, =<.

Do you need to change? 3.Where is the head office of Edexcel? Record the number of hits 10 mins Extension task : Try using speech marks.

Information gathering Task- Work in pairs and search for a leisure park called Smarts Leisure. Find out three facts about this particular leisure park – you must not talk to other pairs or compare answers whilst they are searching. ‘validity’, ‘accuracy’ and ‘authority’ as criteria for evaluating websites 5 mins
