INTRODUCTION BECAUSE THE CIVIL HAS SHAPED OUR SOCIETY TODAY, WE WANT TO ACCURRATELY AND EFFECTIVELY EDUCATE THE THIRD GRADE STUDENTS ON THE CIVIR WAR, AND PROVIDE AN UPCLOSE AND PERSONAL VIEW OF HOW THE WARAFFECTED THIS NATION.

THE STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A MAP OF THE U.S. SO THAT THEY CAN IDENTIFY THE STATES THAT SUCCEEDED THE UNION WHEN LINCOLN WAS ELECTED. THE SOUTH - ON THE SECOND DAY, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE CONFEDERATE ARMY. THEY WILL BE TAUGHT ABOUT THE UNIFORMS, BELIEFS, AND REASONS FOR LEAVING THE UNION.

CONTENT CONTINUED THE NORTH - ON THE THIRD DAY, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE UNION ARMY. THEY WILL BE TAUGHT ABOUT THE UNIFORMS, BELIEFS, AND REASONS FOR FIGHTING THE WAR.  GETTYSBURG ADDRESS -ON THE FOURTH DAY, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS AND WHY ABRAHAM LINCOLN THOUGHT IT WAS THE WORST SPEECH HE HAD EVER GIVEN.

CONTENT CONTINUED THE WAR - ON THE FIFTH DAY OF THE UNIT, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE MAJOR BATTLES OF THE CIVIL WAR AND THEIR OUTCOMES. THEY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO SEE HOW EACH BATTLE HELPED THE NORTH WIN THE WAR.  VICTORY - ON THE LAST DAY OF THE UNIT, THE STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF THE CIVIL WAR AND HOW IT HAS AFFECTED THE SOCIETY IN WHICH WE LIVE.

CONTENT CONTINUED EVALUATION - ON THE LAST DAY OF THE UNIT, THE STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A COMPREHENSIVE TEST OVER THE CIVIL WAR. THE TEST WILL CONSIST MAINLY OF ESSAY QUESTIONS.

OBJECTIVES THE THIRD GRADE STUDENTS WILL: 1. LISTEN TO AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CIVIL WAR 2. COLOR AND IDENTIFY THE SUCCEEDED STATES ON A MAP OF THE UNITED STATES 3. WATCH A VIDEO ABOUT THE CONFEDERATE ARMY 4. COMPARE AND CONTRAST THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMY 5. RESEARCH THE UNIFORMS OF EACH ARMY AND CREATE ARTWORK TO DISPLAY IN THE CLASSROOM 6. BE ENTERTAINED WHILE THE TEACHER DRESSES UP AS ABE LINCOLN AND GIVES THE GETTYSBURG ADD. 7. ROLE PLAY A MAKE BELIEVE BATTLE BY DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TO DEFEAT THE ENEMY 8. WRITE TWO MOCK LETTERS

OUTCOME: STUDENTS WILL GET A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE UNIT. THEY WILL ALSO LEARN ABOUT THE MAIN IDEAS OF THE WAR DEVELOPMENT: THE STUDENTS WILL WRITE A MOCK LETTER ON ENLISTMENT. THEY WILL ALSO COLOR A MAP.

ACTIVITIES – DAY TWO INTRODUCTION: THE STUDENTS WILL WATCH A VIDEO ON THE CONFEDERATE ARMY AND PARTICIPATE IN A MOVIE REFLECTION DISCUSSION. THEY WILL ALSO BE DIVIDED INTO RESEARCH GROUPS. OUTCOME: THE STUDENTS GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY AND DISCUSS THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE CONFEDERATE CODE OF CONDUCT. DEVELOPMENT: RESEARCH THE CONFEDERATE ARMY IN DETAIL AND FORM A KWL CHART.

ACTIVITIES – DAY THREE : INTRODUCTION: THE STUDENTS WILL WATCH A VIDEO ON THE UNION ARMY AND PARTICIPATE IN A MOVIE REFLECTION DISCUSSION. THEY WILL ALSO BE DIVIDED INTO RESEARCH GROUPS. OUTCOME: THE STUDENTS GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF THE UNION ARMY AND DISCUSS THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE YANKEE CODE OF CONDUCT. DEVELOPMENT: RESEARCH THE UNION ARMY IN DETAIL AND FORM A KWL CHART.

ACTIVITIES - DAY FOUR INTRODUCTION: TEACHER WILL DRESS UP LIKE ABE LINCOLN AND GIVE THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS TO THE CLASS. OUTCOME: STUDENTS WILL BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT SPEECH REGARDING LINCOLN’S PRESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT. DEVELOPMENT: STUDENTS WILL WRITE A SPEECH ON A SUBJECT THAT IS IMPORTANT TO THEM AS INDIVIDUALS.

ACTIVITIES – DAY FIVE INTRODUCTION: THE TEACHER WILL HAND OUT AN OUTLINE OF EACH MAJOR BATTLE OF THE CIVIL WAR. THE TEACHER WILL STRESS THE CASUALTY LEVEL OF EACH BATTLE. OUTCOME: THE STUDENTS BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE TRAGEDIES OF WAR AND THE HORROR OF HOT RED DEATH. DEVELOPMENT: THE STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS BY THE TEACHER AND PLOT STRATEGIES TO WIN A MOCK WAR.

ACTIVITIES – DAY SIX INTRODUCTION: THE TEACHER WILL OUTLINE THE SURRENDER CUSTOMS AND EXPLAIN HOW THE SOUTH FAILED IN SUCCEEDING FROM THE UNION. OUTCOME: STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE THRILL OF VICTORY AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT. DEVELOPMENT: STUDENTS WILL WRITE A MOCK NEWS ARTICLE EXPLAINING THE RESULTS OF THE CIVIL WAR.

EVALUATION ESSAY ONE: EXPLAIN THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS AND BELIEF SYSTEMS OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY. ESSAY TWO: EXPLAIN THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS AND BELIEF SYSTEMS OF THE UNION ARMY. ESSAY THREE: WRITE A SECOND MOCK LETTER HOME TO YOUR PARENTS, GIRLFRIEND, WIFE, ETC. DESCRIBING YOUR EXPERIENCES IN THE WAR. ESSAY FOUR: IF YOU WERE ALIVE DURING THE CIVIL WAR, WHICH ARMY WOULD YOU SIDE WITH.
