Battles in the South 2. British expected slaves to join their side. a. British promised slaves freedom b. Thousands of slaves joined

Battles in the South 6. America got Horatio Gates (general who won at Saratoga) a. forms a new Southern Army b. Gates headed to SC to challenge Lord Cornwallis’ army

Battles in the South c. Francis Marion “Swamp Fox” helped Gates by destroying English boats (they had been providing communication between England and Charlestown. Swamp Fox also helped by surprising the British as they were moving American POWs. He was able to get the Americans free!
