All About AWIS

Our Mission AWIS is a national advocacy organization championing the interests of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) across all disciplines and employment sectors. Founded in 1971 as the only all-inclusive multi-disciplinary membership organization for women in STEM. The AWIS website – provides an overview of the association’s activities.

Organization History Founded in 1971 at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Premier leadership organization advocating for the interests of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) For over 40 Years AWIS has fought for equity and career advancement for women – from the bench to the board room Vigilant against workforce obstacles that prevent women from realizing their full potential in STEM Uniting women through a nationwide network of chapters and partnerships with aligned professional organizations

Who We Are The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is the largest multi-discipline organization for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) dedicated to achieving equity and full participation of women in all disciplines and across all employment sectors. AWIS reaches more than 15,000 professionals in STEM with members and chapters nationwide. Membership is open to any individual who supports the vision and mission of AWIS.

Notable Achievements Participated in lawsuits to enhance professional environment for women in science (including at the NIH) Published wide spread literature (A Hand Up, Women Mentoring Women in Science, Getting the Most Out of Your Mentoring Relationships) Won a Presidential Mentoring Award for Creating Tomorrow’s Scientists: Models of Community Mentoring Accredited as a UN-NGO and attended the 4 th World Conference of Women Where AWIS created and co-chaired the first science and technology caucus for a UN Women’s Conference

Notable Achievements (cont.) Received an ADVANCE Leadership Award from NSF Petitioned Congress to strengthen the enforcement of Title IX to STEM departments in academia Top-Rated as a Women’s Empowerment Nonprofit by web leader, GreatNonprofits Elsevier Foundation Grant Awardee to launch a national Work/Life Satisfaction Program Collaborated with 7 partner societies to address underrepresentation of women among recipients of awards from STEM disciplinary societies.

Your Network Local AWIS chapters provide opportunities for women in STEM to interact, learn from one another, and provide mutual support. AWIS collaborates actively with organizations such as the National Postdoctoral Association and the Society of Women Engineers. AWIS nominates and champions women in STEM for high-level leadership positions and prestigious awards.

Your Resource The quarterly AWIS Magazine highlights information on balancing work and family, negotiating workplace hurdles, getting grants, getting published and…getting noticed! AWIS STEMiNARS© provide information focusing on important issues such as career development, mentoring, and work-life satisfaction. AWIS sends out the Washington Wire on a bi-weekly basis, which provides up-to-date information on matters related to science policy, science education, and women’s issues.

Your Voice AWIS is committed to focusing on the inclusion and advancement of underrepresented minority women in STEM. AWIS is an advocate for initiatives that improve the status of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is a leader in developing improved public programs and employment policies for women in STEM. Strategically located near Washington, DC, AWIS is an established presence on Capitol Hill, and works closely with agencies such as the NIH and NSF. The monthly AWIS in Action keeps our members informed on important policy issues.
