Sources CEOP Questionnaire Analysis 2007 National Statistics (Childwise 2012) 75% of 5-16yr olds own their own computer 44% of 5-10yr olds and 96% of 11-16yr olds own a mobile phone 59% use phones to access the internet 56% of 5-10yr olds and 73% of 11-16yr olds have their own games console at home, spending an average of 1.7 hours a day on it. 63% of 9-16yr olds have their own Facebook profile (36% of 9-12yr olds) 12-15yr olds have an average of 266 on-line friends

Things to watch out for Here are some common signs of grooming that you should be aware of. It doesn’t mean that your child is being groomed, but signs to look out for if you’re worried: Excessive use of the computer Alternatively, suddenly stopping all internet use Aggressive behaviour regarding internet usage Secretive behaviour Change in use of sexual language

Sexting ‘The sending or receiving of personal sexual images or conversations to another party, usually via mobile phone messaging’ Images are illegal under 18yrs old Has been linked to self-harm and suicides with teenagers Almost impossible to retract and trace once sent

New Technologies Established technology; Facebook, Twitter, MSN, IM and BBM Increasingly popular technology; Skype, KIK messenger Look out for; Ask FM, Snapchat, Instagram, pro self-harm and anorexia sites

Our Advice to Parents Know what your children are doing online Ask them to teach you to use any applications Keep the computer in a family room - this means you can keep more control of what they do (i.e. Webcams)

Our Advice to Parents Help your children to understand that they should never give out personal details to online friends - personal information includes: –their messenger id – address –mobile number and any pictures of themselves, If your child receives spam / junk & texts, remind them never to believe them. reply to them or use them.
