SC ICT Certification Level 1 13 Web Publishing By Ross Parker

Simple Web Publishing Traditionally, publishing to the web required: –Knowledge of HTML –A server –A domain name –An FTP client Now there are many simple ways to do this

What’s What? All definitions are flexible, possibly fleeting and not mutually exclusive! What’s a website? –Content written in HTML, delivered via HTTP What’s a blog? –A website used as a “web log”, or online diary What’s a wiki? –A collaborative web site, usually structured

3 of many Wiki Spaces Free for education! Collaboration Easy to use Wiki framework Content integration Google Sites Free! Collaboration Easy to use Website framework Content integration Blogger Free! Express yourself Easy to use Blog framework Content integration

Important Considerations How much control do I have over: –Layout –Design –Permissions –HTML Are there money or hidden (ads) costs? Are there widgets or gadgets? Can I integrate and syndicate? Is it too specialised or too general?

Other Ways To Publish Streaming video (youtube.com) Podcasting Social networking (ning.com) Build and run your own site –Hand coding or WYSIWYG? Publish images (flickr.com) Contribute to a large wiki (wikipedia.org) Answer questions (answers.yahoo.com)

What now? 1.Decide on a type of site to create 2.Choose a service to use (or DIY!) 3.Use the service to create the site 4.Explore what you can do with your site: 1.Layout 2.Structure 3.Design 4.Content 5.Collaborate

Thinking about… What are the implications of 6 billion publishers?
