Journal What do you want to accomplish in the year 2015? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 10 years?
Current Events Discuss current events.
Essential Questions What is a stereotype? How can stereotypes be harmful? What role can and does advertising play in perpetuating or combating damaging stereotypes?
Stereotypes in Advertising A stereotype is an assumption or belief about an entire group of people. Share examples of stereotypes that you are aware of. Acknowledging the existence of a stereotype is not the same as saying you believe the stereotype to be true.
Think back… Think back to the strategies for critically reading advertisements (what we did last class period). What power do advertisements have to keep stereotypes going? What power do advertisements have to show stereotypes to be unfair or untrue?
Examine Examine your ad within your group. Apply what you know about advertising and discuss the stereotypes contradicted or perpetuated in the ad you are viewing. You will present your findings to the class.
Examine VgHrV9H-8k Think about the 2 ads and what analyze them. Complete the handout following the directions on the page. Discuss observations and answers.
Take away What you need to take away from this activity… Advertisements are everywhere. Continue to examine ads and be a critical consumer of media. Think about how advertising messages make you feel and how the messages affect the way you respond to something.
Who should we be? Thinking about the stereotypes within advertising…find an ad and examine: who is shown? how are they shown? What is true about the families represented in the ads? How are families in ads similar to and different from families in real life? What kinds of messages might the ad be sending about how families should be.

Consider and answer the following: By representing people in a certain way again and again, advertisers send a message about the right way – or the only way- to be. Answer the following question: How might you be influenced by ads if they featured more diverse, realistic representations of families? Write a paragraph or draw a picture showing how this change might affect your feelings about yourself, your family, and the people around you. Share your responses.
Argue Take into consideration all of the information we have discussed so far with advertising. One group will develop an argument in favor of the following ad(s), the way people are represented, how these people are often underrepresented, etc. Another group will make the case that these attempts are harmful. It’s okay if you don’t agree with the side you have been given, but you still have to make the case. Share arguments.
