Pedal PORTAL: Naturalistic bicycling study Senior Design Project Idea Cara Hamann, MPH, PhD Corinne Peek-Asa, MPH, PhD Daniel McGehee, PhD

Pedal PORTAL Examining cyclist behavior in a natural environment using of video, audio, and GPS data Project Status – Pilot study of 10 child and 10 adult cyclists complete – Larger 100-bike study being planned Data uses – Examine cyclist/motorist interactions, intersection behavior, route selection/preference, crashes, near misses, and rider and driver errors, evaluation of bicycle safety curricula, bike simulator validationbike simulator validation

Current Instrumentation Contour HD+2 camera – GPS enabled – sample rate 5x second – High Resolution – 170 o Degree view – 32 GB memory About 6 hrs of recording time – 2.5 hrs record time on one charge

Pedal PORTAL Graphical User Interface for Data Coding

What we need from you Increase field of view from 170 ◦ to 360 ◦ via helmet camera and/or bike instrumentation Design an event button to be installed on bicycles that syncs with video/GPS data Requirements: – Low cost – Easy to operate and maintain – Easy to install on bike or helmet – Data synced and easy to extract for coding
