The incidence of self- injurious behavior is alarmingly high, yet significantly under-reported and untreated. Family members, concerned persons and professionals are often not aware that self-injury is occurring until a crisis situation presents itself. How does a family member or a professional create an environment in which an individual feels safe enough to disclose self- injurious behaviors? Once self-injury has been identified, what are the effective ways to respond?

Office staff goes directly to classroom to escort student from class (unless teacher is not with other students at the time and can escort student). Office staff does initial interview with student and consults with Health Office to rule out need for immediate treatment or medical referral. Health Services begins incident injury report document.

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Office staff consults with other appropriate staff to clarify nature of concern and gather additional data (i.e. principal to counselor, counselor to psychologist, etc.). Office staff person completes incident report/summary. Process is complete after reporting back to referring person and all staff on student’s schedule (also report back to building administrator). may be used and/or any other most efficient communication method.
