Let’s talk a bit about ART

When artists are just starting out they learn many techniques of Art. Usually they make careful observations and then practice drawing objects and people. Next they learn to shade and use value to make what they’ve drawn to look “real”.

Art students have the opportunity to practice with many different types of media. Many love drawing. They use pencil, colored pencil, charcoals or marker.

Some artists love painting or photography.

Some artists enjoy working in 3 dimensions and we call those artists: sculptors.

All artists learn the Elements of Art and they apply them to all their work. These elements are: Line, Shape, Value, Texture and Color.

Ok… so I like Art and I want to get better at it…but

How is this class different from a regular Art class?? How is this class different from a regular art class?

While the Visual Art class will concentrate on “Art for Art’s Sake, which means they will create works of art that express emotion or that are beautiful or stirring to both the artist and viewer… This class will create

In this class we will be concentrating on Graphic Design. So what is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is 2 dimensional design that focuses on COMMUNICATION through text (words), pictures and symbols.

Everything you see in print and on the web is an example of graphic design. The powerpoint you are looking at now is an example of graphic design. The letters, pictures, symbols and colors are communicating what this class is about

A Visual Art student may create a landscape painting

An Art and Design student will invent a new cereal and not only illustrate the box front...

That means that while we will start out practicing and refining our Art skills through drawing and painting projects, as well as review and apply the Elements of Art to our projects, we will take a different direction for much of our Art. Most of our projects will serve a purpose in our everyday lives.

For example… while Visual Art student may be asked create a landscape painting You may be asked to design the cover of a book that features you as the author… Or create a new cereal and not only illustrate the box front but create an ad campaign to sell it..

Instead of sculpting wire figures and paper mache animals… You will be asked to design and create a new kind of chair… Or create jewelry that could be sold for a fundraiser… Or design an Art and Design tee shirt!

Our first project will be an easy one…design a nametag for yourself… This will help me learn your names and I’ll learn a little about you too. The next project will focus on the first Element of Art…..
