American Artist He was born in New York He lived in Bloomington Illinois as a child until age 11 He was a fine horseman and his uncle was a saddle maker by trade He loved to hunt, swim, ride horses and go camping He went to Yale art school and played on the football team there He enjoyed creating action paintings and drawings for the student newspaper He journeyed to Montana when he was 19 to see the “wild west” His first art sale was to Harper Weekly magazine when on this trip

 ST RA IG HT He gained fame and fortune as a serious painter and sculptor. He was a realistic painter but became more impressionistic in his two final years He enjoyed painting horses and often brought them into the studio where he painted ! Blackfoot War Party was exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the New York Herald said he would one day be listed among our great American painters
