Puberty Puberty is the physical process where a child develops into an adult – an adult who is capable of reproduction. Although it may start (usually) between ages 10-15, it may not finish until around 18. Girls generally start puberty before boys.

Growth Clock Everyone grows and changes at different rates, and people all start puberty when their body is ready. Hormones control the rate of change and when the changes start.

Growth Clock Sometimes people refer to the timing of the onset of puberty and the rate of change as your “growth clock”. Try not to get wrapped up in what you think is “normal”, because everyone has a different growth clock.

Boys vs Girls! Boys and girls both experience changes during puberty. Do you know which changes happen to who?

Changes at Puberty Boys Girls 1-The breasts grow larger 2-The shoulders grow broader 3-The hips grow broader 4-Hair grows under the arms 5-The body becomes more muscular 6-The monthly periods start 7-Voice breaks and becomes deeper 8-Hair grows around the sex organs 9-Hair and skin become more greasy 10-Sperm are produced 11-Ova (eggs) are produced 12-Feel attracted to opposite / same sex

What do you really know?!? There are many stories and myths surrounding periods. Take the quiz to see if you know the true facts from the untrue ones. We will go through the answers as a class...

Let’s learn more about how a girls reproductive system works. Let’s start by focusing on the menstrual cycle.

Quiz – TRUE OR FALSE You should not wash your hair during a period. It may take 2-3 years for periods to settle into a monthly routine. Pre-menstrual tension, about a week before the period starts, may make you feel bad-tempered and depressed. Gentle exercise can help if a girl has some period pain. You should not swim during a period. Some religions forbid using tampons. Girls lose a dangerous amount of blood during their period. If your periods are very painful your doctor can give you medication to help. If you haven’t started your periods by the age of 16 you should see a doctor. Baby girls are born with about 2 million eggs in their ovaries.

Quiz – TRUE OR FALSE You should not wash your hair during a period? FALSE It may take 2-3 years for periods to settle into a monthly routine? TRUE Pre-menstrual tension, about a week before the period starts, may make you feel bad-tempered and depressed? TRUE – it can also cause headaches, general tiredness, swollen breasts and spots.

Quiz – TRUE OR FALSE 4. Gentle exercise can help if a girl has some period pain? TRUE 5. You should not swim during a period? FALSE – but you may need to use a tampon if you swim

Quiz – TRUE OR FALSE 6. Some religions forbid using tampons? TRUE – as they break the hymen and the girl is no longer technically a virgin 7. Girls lose a dangerous amount of blood during their period. FALSE – it’s around 3-5 tablespoons

Quiz – TRUE OR FALSE 8. If your periods are very painful your doctor can give you medication to help? TRUE – medicines can also help periods to become regular 9. If you haven’t started your periods by the age of 16 you should see a doctor? TRUE 10. Baby girls are born with about 2 million eggs in their ovaries? TRUE

Some girls become very moody just before they have their period – this is called ‘pre-menstrual tension’. How could school help with this? How could parents/carers help? What could a girl do to help herself at this time?

Ovulation: Is when a woman’s hormones signal the release of an egg from an ovary. The egg will travel into the Fallopian Tube where it stays for a few days.

If it isn’t fertilized, it will leave the body along with blood and other material the body creates in preparation for possible pregnancy. This is part of the menstrual cycle called a period.

Talk to a doctor or nurse if: your period lasts longer than a week you have to change your pad very often (soaking more than one pad every 1-2 hours) you go longer than 3 months between periods you have bleeding in between periods you have an unusual amount of pain before or during your period your periods were regular then became irregular

Let’s learn more about how a guys reproductive system works.

Although the timing of these changes is different for every guy, the stages of puberty generally follow a set sequence:

During the first stage of male puberty, the scrotum and testes grow larger. Next, the penis becomes longer, and the seminal vesicles and prostate gland grow.

Hair begins to appear in the pubic area and later it grows on the face and underarms. During this time, a male's voice also deepens. Boys also undergo a growth spurt during puberty as they reach their adult height and weight.

Chances are that you boys during puberty will have a "wet dream" — something that can be embarrassing and confusing, but is completely normal. A wet dream is also known as a nocturnal emission.

Usually this happens during dreams that have sexual images. Sometimes guys wake up from a wet dream, but sometimes they sleep through it.

Not for notes… Although some guys may feel embarrassed or even guilty about having wet dreams, they can't be controlled and you can't stop them from happening.

List some reasons that a teen might want to become sexually active.  Desire, curiosity  Partner pressure  Wanting to feel loved  Social pressure

Health Stats Who has the most influence on a teen’s decisions about sex? The graph shows how some teens responded to this question. Which influences do you think would help teens to make healthy decisions about sex?

Physical Attraction Another name for feelings of intense attraction to another person is infatuation. Although these feelings can sometimes be overwhelming, they are normal and healthy for teenagers. Dating is typically the way that teenagers get to know people to whom they are attracted. By dating someone, you can learn about his or her personality, interests, abilities, and values.

Risk of Pregnancy A teenage pregnancy can pose serious health problems for the baby and the mother. Even though a teen might be mature enough to get pregnant, they have a much higher risk for complications. Babies born to young mothers are often smaller and less healthy than those born to older women. 1 in 6 teenage girls who engage in sexual intercourse becomes pregnant.

Showing affection Given this decision what are some of the other ways that Stewart and Lisa can demonstrate their love for one another?

Showing affection answers: Hugs Holding Hands Kissing and cuddling Spending more time together Talk about their feelings What answers did you have?

Do you still have unanswered questions about puberty or abstinence? Everyone take out a piece of paper. Write your question on the piece of paper and I will answer it. If you do not have a question, you need to write “I do not have a question at this time” – everyone hands in a paper so no one knows who asked a question and who didn’t!
