Document IPW-41 IP and Telecoms Interworking Workshop N umbering, Naming Addressing and Routing IETF EMUM WG Proposal International Telecommunication Union Telecommuniations Standardization Bureau Geneva January 2000
Presented By Representing IETF Richard Shockey 8045 Big Bend Boulevard, Suite 110 Saint Louis, Missouri USA (314) Voice (314) Fax E.Mail/IFAX
Problem Statement How do you link the resources of the GSTN with the resources of the Internet? How do you find a resource on the Internet if you only have a telephone number [E.164]? How do you make this simple, easy to use without “reinventing the wheel”?
Solution Proposal – ENUM WG Put Telephone Numbers into the Global Domain Name System [DNS] Use proposed NAPTR and SRV Resource Records [RR] to find : IP Address addresses SIP / H.323 servers LDAP directories
Why DNS? Its there.. It works.. its global.. it scales.. its fast.. its open. Why not something else? X.500 ? It was the judgment of the IESG to explore the DNS option first.
What ENUM is NOT… Actual Routing of Phone calls within the terminating application protocol..what ever that may be. It is not a “white pages directory service” Does not list “capabilities” of endpoints – IETF RESCAP WG
“Out of Scope” for ENUM Provisioning “e164.int” Propagation Administration Service Logic Carrier Accounting - Reconciliation Anything to do with “policy”
How does ENUM Work? Take a fully qualified E.164 number and create a DNS entry in a highly defined and structured domain. The search for resources associated with becomes a look up to : e164.int Each digit becomes a definable and distributed “zone” in DNS terms
How does ENUM Work? Response to query for e164.int In this response the prefered contact method is SIP ord pr fl service re replacement IN NAPTR "a" "sip+N2R" "" IN NAPTR "s" "potscall+N2R" "" _potscall._tcp.paf.swip.net. IN NAPTR "a" "smtp+N2R" "" In this response the prefered contact method is H.323 IN NAPTR "s" "sip+N2R" "" “h323gw.tele3.se. IN NAPTR "s" "potscall+N2R" "" _potscall._tcp.paf.swip.net. IN NAPTR "a" "smtp+N2R" ""
ENUM in VoIP Gateways ENUM allows gateways to find each other. ENUM is not for routing calls where than one gateway can handle the call. IPTEL WG – [TRIP] Telephony Routing Information Protocol ( proposed )
ENUM in Universal Messaging EMA-IETF Voice Profile for Internet Mail [VPIM] ENUM enables carrier and enterprise Voice Mail systems to interoperate and exchange messages Retrieve voice mail from anywhere in the world with a local call
ENUM in Fax Fax is not “dead.” Fax is a essential global communications service. Fax number to box [IETF RFC 2305-ITU T.37] Fax number to ITU-T.38 servers Fax number to Internet Print Protocol servers
ENUM in Local Number Portability ENUM could be used for Local Number Portability by carriers. SCP servers could query DNS for available records.
Conclusions “Standards are wonderful…that’s why we have so many of them.” Dr. Herman R. Silbiger ITU SG8/Q4 Rapporteur
