Socorro ISD ESL Academy September 7, 2011

Purpose Limited English proficient students shall have an opportunity to receive special instruction designed to prepare them to be successful in kindergarten and first grade. Instruction shall focus on language development and essential knowledge and skills appropriate to the level of the student. The program shall address the affective, lingustic, and cognitive needs of the limited English proficient students.

Focus Instruction focuses on development of daily oral English language speaking and listening skills and basic English conversational skills. Development of Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (reading, listening, writing and speaking academic skills). The transfer of background knowledge and skills learned/ acquired in the primary language to English. Developing English language proficiency through thematic organization.

19 TAC Section Required Summer School Program Guidelines Districts must provide a summer school program for limited English proficient students who will be eligible for admission to kindergarten and first grade at the beginning of the next school year. Year round school districts can offer program during intersession for a total of 120 hours of instruction. Participation in program is optional with the parents of the student. Student / teacher ratio for the program shall not exceed 18 to one; with a minimum of 10 students on a daily basis. District is not required to provide transportation. Teachers must be bilingual certified. Student’s progress must be provided to parents at the conclusion of the program. District shall maintain records of eligibility, attendance and progress of students.

Dates October 3 – 7, 2011 (5 days) April 2 – 5, 2012 (4 days) June 11 – 14 June 18 – 21 (11 days) June 25 – 27 Scheduled time : 8:00 – 2:30 with a 30 minute lunch. Send out parent letters to begin recruiting students.

Required Documents Roster / Attendance All students on roster must have signed parent letter Student ID is required on attendance roster Lesson Plans Lesson Plan must have: teacher name, school, grade level and date Teachers may use template provided Lesson plan should reflect focus of instruction provided, activities and materials used Parent Contact Phone Log Parents must be contacted when their child is absent Document attempt to contact Time Sheet Time sheet must be filled out properly SS# is required Signed by administrator All required documents must be turned in by 4:30 on last day of Academy session. No exceptions.

Letter of Agreement All teachers interested in teaching ESL Academies must sign and submit a Letter of Agreement which includes: Instruction Documentation Student / teacher ratio(minimum of 10 not more than 18) 120 $30 Dates of implementation Signatures of teacher, administrator, Bilingual/ESL coordinator
