Welcome to Mr. Fischer’s 3 rd Grade Class Curriculum Night

College and Experience Graduated from St. Xavier University in 2007 with a degree in Elementary Education. Currently enrolled at Concordia University Chicago in their Educational Technology Masters program. 6 years teaching experience at different levels. I have taught 6 th grade, 5 th grade, Kindergarten, 3 rd grade, and even PE. This is my 3 rd year at Rogus.

“Celebrate the Child” “Celebrate the Child” is our school’s theme for the year. – Focus on Acceptance, Belonging, and Community.

4 Homework Three to Four times per week minutes per night Homework will vary Students will write all assignments in assignment notebook.

P.B.I.S. PBIS-Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports The following expectations are intended to make our classroom/school a respectful, responsible, and safe environment. Following these expectations will fosters a positive learning environment both in and out of the classroom…. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe.

“Be Respectful” BE RESPECTFUL- What it looks like…. When a teacher/adult is talking, be quiet and attentive. Ask for permission before borrowing items from a classmate. Be kind to your classmates with words and actions. Raise your hand for permission to talk and/or leave your seat. Follow directions the first time they are given.

“Be Responsible” BE RESPONSIBLE- What is looks like… Have all supplies and materials needed for each class. Actively participate in lessons – your input is important. Complete ALL homework, in class assignments, group work, and/or projects. Write ALL assignments in your assignment notebook.

“Be Safe” BE SAFE- What it looks like… Keep hands and feet to yourself Use school supplies appropriately. Walk at all times. Keep classroom floor clear of books, backpacks, boxes, etc…

9 PBIS Students earn tickets for positive behavior. Tickets can be earned from any teacher. Students are responsible for keeping tickets. “Eagles Nest” allows students to use their tickets to buy tangible and non- tangible items.

Curriculum-What to expect in 3 rd grade… Science Some topics we will cover: The Water Cycle The Life Cycle Vertebrates/Invertebrates We will be using our science textbook as well as Science A to Z printed readers. Social Studies Some topics we will cover The American Revolution The Declaration of Independence Colonial Life Our main book we will be using is titled The Magic Tree House: American Revolution.

Curriculum-What to expect in 3 rd grade… The following is a sample of of what you child will be working on in Reading/Language Arts… Reading closely to find main ideas and supporting details in a story. Students recount stories and determine the central message, lesson, or moral, explaining how it is developed in the text. Students distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. Students ask and answer questions about what they read by referring directly to parts of the text. Students introduce a topic and use facts, definitions, and details to develop points. Students provide a concluding statement or section. Story test will follow every story we read from the text and will usually take place on Fridays.

Curriculum-What to expect in 3 rd grade… The following is a sample of of what you child will be working on in Math class… Addition and Subtraction with 1,000. Representing and interpreting Data. Multiplication and division. Understanding and comparing fractions. Finding Perimeter and area. Describing and classifying 2-digit shapes.

Specials Gym- We will have gym 3 days a week: M, T, and F. Gym teacher is Mr. Mena Music- We have music 2 times a week on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Music teacher is Mrs. Larson Art/Computers- We will have art/computers once every other week. Our Art teacher is Mrs. Olszta and our Computer teachers is Ms. Goshko.

Weapons Policy Weapons A student who is determined to have brought one of the following objects to school, any school-sponsored activity or event, or any activity or event that bears a reasonable relationship to school shall be Expelled For Period of at least one calendar year, but not more than 2 calendar years. – A firearm, meaning any gun, rifle, shotgun, or weapon as defined by Section 921 of Title 18, of the United States Code (18 U.S.C. § 921), firearm as defined in Section 1.1 of the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act (430 ILCS 65/), or firearm as defined in Section 241 of the Criminal Code of 1961 (720 ILCS 5/24-1). – A knife, brass knuckles, or other knuckle weapon regardless of its composition, a Billy club, or any other object if used or attempted to be used to cause bodily harm, including “look-alikes” of any firearm as defined above
