FALL BEDS/FALL BEDS STAFF Changes and Refreshers

FALL BEDS CHANGES Radon Form Deleted Child Care form changed to match Spring Collection Child Care form will be prepopulated with Spring data

FALL BEDS REFRESHERS – CHILD CARE PROGRAMS Schools providing child-care programs before or after school are required to be licensed by the Iowa Department of Human services (DHS) by January 1 st, Child-care programs include services such as wraparound care that are independent of class time. It is important to note that even if child-care programs are not being operated by the school, but are on school property, they must be reported by the school as part of the BEDS collection process each fall and spring.

FALL BEDS - REFRESHERS Data are to be submitted for Infant and Toddler Child Care, Preschool Child Care and Before and After School programs and must be reported as of October 1 st. If you don’t have a DHS license number yet, enter the program standards used prior to the legislative change

FALL BEDS REFRESHERS – CLASS SIZE Grades K-3 Count date October 1 st Report “regular” grade classrooms or “home rooms” Report self contained or “home room” teachers only. Do not combine sections Age combined classrooms need not be reported If you report them, report as “Other” and add a comment that let’s us know the grades included. If you report transitional kindergarten, add a comment to let us know it is transitional kindergarten.

FALL BEDS REFRESHERS – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Do not include items such as mandatory trainings, parent-teacher conference days, teachers preparing in their classrooms, staff orientations, or time spent preparing grades, report cards, lesson plans etc. If your committee hasn’t decided how to spend the allocation before the Fall BEDS due date, report your best estimate, or enter the amount in ‘Other’ and let us know the committee hasn’t decided how to spent the funds by entering a comment in the comment box.

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS Number of Sections: The number of sections taught must be entered for each teaching assignment. General Elementary Classroom: Report the number of sections based on the number of different groups of students per assignment. Pull-Out Programs: Report as one (1) section. Special Education: If this assignment is for a pull-out program, then report as one (1) section.

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS If the assignment is a regularly scheduled class: report the number of sections based on the number of different groups of students per assignment. If the special education teacher is in a regular classroom with a regular education teacher (co- teaching): the number of sections would be determined by the number of groups the special education teacher is working with.

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS Middle/High School: Report the number of sections based on the number of different groups of students per assignment. At-Risk: Report as one (1) section. Overload/Early Bird Schedule: Classes taught before, after or as an overload assignment should be reported as one (1) section if the student earns credit (ex: yearbook).

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS Only Special Education teachers can use Reverse Consultation general and special education teachers jointly assess the progress of the student both names should appear in district documentation for the student’s earned credit (course transcript, report cards, or other official documentation).

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS Differentiation between Core Content and Special Education Teachers: Core Content TeacherSpecial Education Teacher Content expert Assigns student grade with special education teacher Assures progress in course Certifies student has met course requirements Strategy expert Ensures student makes progress toward IEP goals Ensures student receives IEP services Ensures appropriate accommodations

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS Licensed staff with the same position, program, building, assignment do not need separate assignments for grade levels Example: Coach that coaches different sports at different grades Enter one position and assignment, but add all grades. Example: Middle School teacher that teaches pre-algebra to 8 th graders and math to 5 th and 6 th graders Enter one position and assignment for Math (only option available for grades PK-8) then include all sections and all grades.

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS At-Risk Programs: instructor must hold the endorsement applicable for the level of instruction if supervising or overseeing on-line or multiple subject credit recovery programs. a teacher who holds the general elementary classroom teaching endorsement is authorized to teach elementary level (grades K-6) students in at-risk programs and a teacher who holds a secondary level endorsement is authorized to teach secondary level (grades 7-12) students in at-risk programs.

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS At Risk (cont.) A teacher who is responsible for the direct instruction of content (Math, Science, Language Arts, etc.) is required to hold the proper endorsement for the content being taught at the appropriate grade level. Shelter or Detention Center Teachers: According to Iowa Administrative Code 281—63.14(1) Each teacher who is assigned to these programs shall hold Iowa certification either for multi-categorical special education or for behavioral disorders, or both, as appropriate to the grade level of the students served

FALL BEDS STAFF - REFRESHERS Operational Sharing: Fall BEDS Staff Completion date is October 15 th Separate application needs to be verified and certified by October 30th If changes need to be made, they need to be made in Fall BEDS Staff
