Let’s talk a little about our bodies. Source: Badders, W., Douglas, C., Feliciani, J., Jeanpierre, B., Sumners, C., L & Valentino, C. (2007). Science: Florida. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company. Are we made up of cells? Yes, cells are the basic structural unit of a living thing. Are we unicellular organisms (made up of one cell) or multicellular organisms (made up of more than one cell)? We are multicellular organisms. Cells in multicellular organisms are organized at different levels.

Source: Badders, W., Douglas, C., Feliciani, J., Jeanpierre, B., Sumners, C., L & Valentino, C. (2007). Science: Florida. Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin Company. Let’s talk a little about our bodies. First, they are organized into tissues. What is a tissue? -A large group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. -Example: Muscle cells form muscle tissue, nerve cells form nerve tissue, bone cells form bone tissue, skin cells form skin tissue, etc. What is an organ? - A group of related tissues that perform a specific function. - Example: The heart, brain, stomach, liver, etc.

Cells, Tissues, Organs, what is next? Organ Systems –A group of related organs that work together to perform a specific function. –Can you name one organ system? All this makes up an organism – YOU! –Organ systems combine to form the entire organism. –Most multicellular organisms have several organ systems.

Which list is organized from simplest to most complex? 1.cell, organ system, organ, tissue 2.cell, tissue, organ, organ system 3.organ, organ system, cell, tissue 4.tissue, organ, cell, organ system

What happens if one organ, tissue or cell in one of the organ systems stops working?

You get sick...

The Five Points of Life raises awareness for the five ways to share life with others through the donation of: 1.Blood 2.Apheresis 3.Marrow 4.Cord Blood 5.Organ and Tissue

What is BLOOD? How can we save lives through BLOOD?

Act like a boat by picking up oxygen in the lungs, dropping it off to other body parts and then carrying away carbon dioxide we breathe out from our lungs. Red Blood Cells

Kill Germs to Keep You Healthy! White Blood Cells

Platelets Clot to stop bleeding.

The liquid portion of the blood. Plasma

BLOOD How can you share life with others through BLOOD?

Donate! Did you know that every 3 seconds someone needs blood?

What is APHERESIS?

The collection of platelets Did you know that platelets only live 5 days outside your body?

What is CORD BLOOD?

Do you remember the last point of life? ORGAN AND TISSUE

* The heart is an organ/muscle that pumps blood all over the body and is part of the circulatory system. The circulatory system is in charge of getting the blood around the body. Veins – (blue) Arteries – (red) Heart Circulatory System

Respiratory System *Lungs – pair of organs that put oxygen in the body. *Trachea – air travels through this organ from the mouth to the lungs. *The respiratory system is in charge of the gas exchange between the blood and the environment.

Brain Eyes Nerves Spinal Cord Nervous System * The brain is the control center for the whole body and the brain, eyes and spinal cord are located in the nervous system. The nervous system is in charge of all functions of the body.

Digestive System

* What do you need to know about the digestive system? Esophagus:Esophagus: The tube food travels through from the mouth to the stomach. Stomach:Stomach: Releases acid to break down food more so that the body can use the food’s energy. Small Intestine:Small Intestine: Absorbs the energy in food and gives it to the blood to carry to other body parts. Large Intestine:Large Intestine: Absorbs water from undigested food and pumps the waste out of the body. Pancreas:Pancreas: Helps with food digestion and makes a chemical to digest sugar. Gallbladder:Gallbladder: Stores and releases bile (a chemical that helps digest food) made by the liver. Liver:Liver: Removes harmful substances from the bloodstream and helps with digestion.

Skull Bone Cartilage Spinal Column Joint Muscle Tendon Muscular and Skeletal System * Bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments can be donated and stored at tissue banks for future use.

* Kidneys – remove waste from the blood. * Bladder – where urine is stored. * A kidney can be donated while we are alive. Excretory System

Hair Nails Skin Integumentary System

Activity Time!

1.Are we unicellular or multicellular organisms? –Multicellular 2.This is the first point of life. –Blood 3.What are the four components of blood? –Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets and Plasma 4.What part of blood carries oxygen around the body? –Red Blood Cells 5.What component makes our blood red? –Red Blood Cells 6.What is the collection of platelets (or second part of life) called? –Apheresis 7.What do platelets do? –Clot 8.What is the liquid part of our blood? –Plasma

9.Where does cord blood come from? –The Umbilical Cord 10.Who gives permission to donate cord blood? –The Mommy 11.What is the last point of life? –Organ and Tissue 12.Name 2 out of the 6 organs that are currently transplanted? –Kidneys, Heart, Lungs, Liver, Pancreas and Intestines 13.What organ can regenerate itself? –The Liver 14.What organ is usually commonly given as a “live donation?” –Kidneys 15.Can bone, veins and skin be donated? –Yes! 16.Do you know someone that has received or donated an organ? –Freebee!

17.Name the main organ part of the circulatory system. –The Heart 18.Name the pair of organs that put oxygen in the body. –The Lungs 19.Name the organ that is the control center for the entire body (not donated). –The Brain 20.Can the intestines be donated? –Yes! 21.These organs remove waste from the blood (and again, can be a living donation). –The Kidneys 22.What system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver and intestines? –The Digestive System 23.What are the FOUR of the Five Points of Life we discussed today? –Blood, Apheresis, Cord Blood and Organ and Tissue 24.What did you learn today? –Freebee!
