GRE 401: Locate points in the coordinate plane GRE 503: Match linear graphs with their equations

Not Linear Linear

The equations we will be graphing will have two variables, x & y. 2x + 3y = 12 A solution to the equation is any ordered pair (x, y) that makes the equation true. The ordered pair (3, 2) is a solution since 2(3) + 3(2) = 12.

When we plot these ordered pairs on a graph, we would be graphing a line. What ordered pair would satisfy the equation y = 5x – 3? We would use a table of values to list these ordered pairs

y = 2x –  There are an infinite number of points that would satisfy this equation.  When you plot these points on a coordinate plane, you create a graph of the equation.  Every point on the line is a possible solution to the equation!

y = 2x – This is the graph of the equation y = 2x – 1.

y = -3x We only need three points to graph a line.

2x + y = Find three points. 2. Plot points. 3.Draw line.

 Horizontal Lines Equations like y = 3, y = -6, y = 8, etc. result in horizontal lines.  Vertical Lines Equations like x = 4, x = -4, x = 12, etc. result in vertical lines.

y = y is always 4, so x can be any number! 4 0

x = x is always -4, so y can be any number! 6 -4
