Purchase Decisions: Stereo System  You have been saving for a new stereo system. The system you want regularly sells for $329.99, but is now on sale for 20%off.  The amount that an item on sale has been reduced is called the markdown, or discount. When this amount is expressed as a percent, it is called the discount rate.  How much will the stereo cost on sale? Discount rate: 20% or 0.2 Discount rate * regular price = discount Regular Price – Discount = sale price Multiply to find the discount. Subtract to find the sale price.

Customer Complaint Form/Letter  Write a 3-paragraph complaint letter for an unsatisfactory product or service; or create a complaint form using a table; fill it out; include logo.  A complaint letter should include a clear and complete explanation of a consumer’s problem.

*Advertisements & Coupons!  Select three advertisements, one from each of the following: a magazine, a newspaper, and a television commercial. Evaluate each. How much useful information does each contain? Is any information misleading? How does each make you feel about buying the product? Share your findings with the class.

Let’s go shopping!!! 1. Select a product you wish to buy. Paste a picture in Microsoft Word. 2. Make a list of the features you want the product to have and set a price limit for the item. 3. Check brand names, quality, and prices at three stores. 4. How did quality and prices differ from one store to another? 5. How did they differ from brand to brand? 6. Create a table in Microsoft Word to compare and contrast product features.

Group Work! ;) -_-  Ask three or four of your classmates to help you write an original script for a television commercial for a popular product.  Include examples of both honest and misleading advertising techniques.  Act out and record the commercial on video, PowerPoint, or mp3.  Present to class, have them identify the good and poor strategies you used.  Discuss the importance of ethics in advertising.

Enrichment: Reading Labels  Provide a label from a garment containing wool. Include the fabric content and the care instructions.  Find a label for a garment that is supposed to be dry-cleaned only. From your example, note what fabric(s) are dry-cleaned and compare your findings with a permanent press fabric.  Obtain a label from a child’s sleepwear garment. Include the fabric contents, chemicals added, and care instructions. Also, tell how the label is attached to the clothing.  Find a label from a garment that is at least two years old. Tell where the label is attached. Notice if the label is still readable.  Read the label on a prescription bottle. Include the information contained on the label, such as warnings, precautions, or directions for use of the medicine. Also, note additional information supplied, such as a leaflet, with the prescription.
