 BLACK - “Hook” (Also referred to as an “Attention Grabber”):  attention getting device to capture the reader’s interest  a thoughtful question, an interesting statement, OR a relevant quote.  You may use any QUOTE that relates to your thesis.  (1 sentence)  RED - Background Information: You must include  the title of the text  the name of the author  sum-up the plot of the story in a few of sentences  relevant character description.  (3-5 sentences)  BLUE - Thesis: the “controlling idea” of your essay (the thesis statement is to your essay what a topic sentence is to a paragraph). This sentence states your argument/what you claim to be conveyed through the novel! (1 sentence)

 BLUE: Summarize the main points of your essay (your commentary) (2-3 sentences)  BLUE: Comment on importance of the THESIS of your essay. (1-2 sentences)  BLACK: Tie in your “Hook” (Attention Grabber) – bring essay “full-circle” (1-2 sentences)
